4K Monitors: The Next Era of High Definition

Seeking a computer monitor that can deliver the absolute peak of PC graphics performance? 4K monitors are ready to bring their astonishing crispness and clarity to gamers, creatives, remote workers, and anyone else who wants the very best.

4K, also known as 4K UHD, Ultra High Definition, is the highest commonly available resolution for monitors and TVs today. A 4K monitor offers a pixel density of 3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 on ultrawide monitors. That is almost four times as many pixels as a standard 1080p Full HD monitor and almost twice as many as the popular 1440p resolution.

When your 4K monitor puts all of those extra pixels to work, the results are stunning. You will enjoy a crisper, more colorful image quality whether you are chatting via webcam, playing a cinematic game, or enjoying your favorite TV shows and movies.

Is a 4K Monitor the Right Choice for You?

As incredible as 4K monitors are, they are also not the only choice. First, the obvious: 4K displays do come at a price premium due to the high end technology that is inside. Additionally, to get the most out of a 4K display, you will need a graphics card that is capable of maintaining at least a solid 60 frames per second in 4K resolution. What’s more, not all PC games are made to run natively in 4K - which, while it’s becoming more common, is not yet ubiquitous.

If you are not quite ready for 4K, a 2K monitor with 1440p resolution is a good compromise. However, if your system is up to running 4K and you are ready to see what it has to offer, it is a great time to take the plunge on a 4K monitor - you will never want to go back.

Choosing the Best 4K Monitor

Before you make the jump to 4K, consider these factors:

Screen Size: 4K shines brightest on bigger displays, and ultrawide 4K monitors with a screen size of 32 inches and up are popular both for gaming and productivity. Some even support aspect ratios wider than the standard 16:9, however even on a normal 27 to 29 inch screen, most people find that 4K provides a noticeable visual upgrade.

Refresh Rate: This simply means how often the monitor is able to refresh its image. Most people will find anything over 60Hz good enough, but 4K gaming monitors often boast higher refresh rates of 144Hz and up.

Panel Type: VA panels are known for their superb contrast ratio and dark blacks, while IPS panels are prized for their snappy response time and wide viewing angles. Either can be a good choice depending on your intended uses.

Ports and Connectivity: Make sure your monitor includes all the ports and connectors your setup requires. Most 4K monitors include HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 support, which is essential for fast frame rates. Remember to look for any other connectors that your setup requires, like USB C or DisplayPort.

HDR Support: Monitors with high dynamic range offer superior color accuracy and more vivid colors in general. Although almost every 4K screen is designed with some level of HDR support, it is worth checking which specific versions of HDR a model offers, as different levels and technologies exist.

Adaptive Sync: If you use a graphics card with NVIDIA G Sync or AMD FreeSync, make sure to choose a monitor designed for compatibility with that specific adaptive sync technology.
