Warning: This WinBook Tech Article involves making changes to the Windows Registry. If the wrong value is deleted or changed the computer may not boot back into Windows again with out reinstalling Windows on the computer.

When connecting to the Internet, the computer successfully connects to the ISP but is not able to navigate to any Websites. When trying to go to any Website, the message “This page cannot be displayed” appears.

To try to resolve this, perform the following steps.

Backup the Registry.

  1. On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type: Regedit. Click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor window, My Computer is selected.
  4. In the Registry Editor window, click Registry, and then select Export Registry File from the drop-down list.
  5. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select the C: drive from the Save in: drop-down list.
  6. In the Export Registry File dialog box, in the File name: text box, type: Registry.reg.
  7. In the Export Registry File dialog box, verify that All below Export range is selected.
  8. In the Export Registry File dialog box, click Save, and then the Export Registry File dialog box closes automatically.

Edit the Registry.

  1. On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type: Regedit. Click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor window, locate Hkey local machine.
  4. Next to Hkey local machine, click the plus sign (+).
  5. Next to System, click the plus sign (+).
  6. Next to CurrentControlSet, click the plus sign (+).
  7. Next to Services, click the plus sign (+).
  8. Click to select the Winsock2 key, and then delete it by clicking Edit, and then Delete.
  9. Click Yes to confirm file delete, and then close Regedit.

Remove Dial-Up Networking.

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click the Windows Setup tab at the top of the window.
  4. On the Windows Setup tab, click to select Communications, and then click Details.
  5. In the Communications dialog box, click to clear the Dial-Up Networking check box (if it is selected), and then click OK.
  6. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click OK. If prompted to restart the computer, click No.
  7. Close Control Panel.

Reinstall Dial-Up Networking.

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click the Windows Setup tab at the top of the window.
  4. On the Windows Setup tab, click to select Communications, and then click Details.
  5. In the Communications dialog box, click to select the Dial-Up Networking check box, and then click OK.
  6. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click OK. If prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

When you click to clear or click to select the Dial-Up Networking check box, the Winsock2 registry key is rebuilt. This may not be the only cause of the “This page cannot be displayed” message. Please search for WinBook Tech Article WBTA18000033 for more troubleshooting information.
