Please note that this CD cannot be replaced if it is lost. It is a good idea to keep a backup of important date currently on your hard disk at all times. The most important and crucial information to back up is the data (spreadsheets, word processing documents, etc.) that you create. Your operating system and programs can always be reinstalled using the original manufactures' disks or CD's. You will need to decide if you want to try to do this on the floppy drive or an external device such as a tape drive, CDRW, or other removable media drive. You can access the BIOS setup program by pressing the F2 key at boot-up while the WinBook logo is on the screen. You should familiarize yourself with the section of the WinBook J1 Users manual that references the BIOS configuration before attempting to change any settings. Critical File Protection works by preserving copies of system files when you install new software. If you install a software package that damages or replaces a system file, this feature allows you to recover these files. Can I use my MS-DOS Programs with Windows ME? Some MS-DOS based programs will still work in Windows ME. However, since
major changes have been made to the internal workings of the operating
system, you will find that a large number of MS-DOS based programs will
not work. Microsoft has no plans to include support for these programs
in future versions of Windows. It is recommended that you upgrade your
MS-DOS based programs to versions that will work under Windows ME. If
you are not sure if your program will work, you should contact the program's
vendor for compatibility information. Most programs designed for Windows 95 and 98 will work with Windows
ME. Some programs may require patches or updates to work correctly. If
there are questions, you should check with your program's vendor for compatibility
information.
What kind of Multimedia Applications come with Windows ME? Windows ME comes with the Windows Media Player, which is capable of
playing a large variety of media types including: CD-Audio, digital video
and audio files, and Internet streaming media. Networking computers can be a complex process. The basic procedure would be to first install your network adapter, then run the Home Networking Wizard under Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications. Note: Due to the highly customizable nature of network configurations,
WinBook Technical Support does not support networking. Please consult
your system administrator for networking support. Accessibility Options are designed to make Windows more accessible for
people with disabilities. They allow you to modify the display and input
devices to make it easier to work with the computer. Windows does not include any virus protection. Virus protection must
be purchased separately. It is recommended that you purchase an anti-virus
package and update it regularly to protect your computer from viruses
and other malicious programs. Windows controls all power management settings. These settings can be
changed in the Power Options control panel. Internet Explorer 5.5 is an integral part of Windows ME and cannot be
removed. If you prefer a different Web Browser, you may install it, and
have it work properly. If you wish to have the other browser as your default
browser, you may set this under the Internet Options control panel. The Certificate of Authenticity label is attached to the bottom of the
computer. You should write this number down and keep it with your important
documentation. Two good places to keep this are written on your invoice
for the computer, and on a piece of paper in the envelope with your Restore
CD. In accordance with our agreement with Microsoft, we cannot ship Windows
CDs with computers. Your Restore CD has all of the software you need
to reload Windows on your computer. Please do not lose this disk, as it
cannot be replaced. You can check your computer's resources using the System control Panel.
Look under Device Manager, highlight Computer and click properties. You
will have options to view Interrupt Request, Input/Output Range, Direct
