You will need the
following items to complete this Tech Article
Windows
98 CD or XL Driver Disk (PIIX4, CD-ROM, MOUSE, MODEM, VIDEO)
Uninstalling the modem
-
First we must boot the unit
into safe mode. Once the unit is already booted into windows
normal mode, then click on Start, click on Shutdown,
and then choose Restart in MS-DOS mode. Click OK.

This should take you to
a c:\windows DOS prompt. At the prompt type in win /d:m
then press the enter key.

The unit will boot into
windows safe mode. You will get a message saying "Windows
is running in safe mode, etc." Click OK. It
will finish loading and be sitting at your desktop. (Everything will
look larger and different, this is normal.)

Click on Start, click
on Settings, and click on Control Panel.
It will open up the control panel. Double click on System.
Then click on the Device Manager tab. It will display
a list of all hardware devices installed on the unit.

In the list you want to
look for a category that says Modem. If you do NOT
have a category that says Modem then skip to the next step.
Click on the plus sign next to Modem. It will
display a list of all modems installed. We want to remove all
of them, simply highlight the modem and then click on the Remove
button. It will give you a warning. Click OK.
Do this until all the modems are removed. You will notice that
once you remove all the modems, the category for modem will disappear
as well.

You should still be under
the Device manager tab. Look for a category that says Other
Devices. If you do NOT see a category that says other
devices then skip to the next step. Once you locate the Other
Devices category, click on the plus sign next to it.
Remove all unknown devices or modems in the list. To do this
simply highlight the device and then click on the Remove button.
It will give you a warning. Click OK. Do this until
all the devices are removed again the category will disappear.

You should still be under
the Device manager tab. Look for a category that says Ports
(COM and LPT). If you do NOT see a category
that says other devices then skip to the next step. Once you
locate the Ports category, click on the plus sign next to it.
You should see Communications Port (COM1), Infrared Printing
Port, Infrared Serial Port, and Printer Port (LPT1) in this
list. If there is anything in your list that is NOT
listed above then remove it. To do this simply highlight the
device and then click on the Remove button. It will give
you a warning. Click OK. Do this until all the
extra items are removed. Once you are finished your list should
match the list above. If you are missing the Infrared
printing or serial ports don not worry they will not affect
the proper installation of the modem.

You should still be under
the Device Manager tab. Now close the window by clicking on
the X in the upper right. Click on Start,
then click on Shutdown, and click on Shutdown
my computer and then click OK. Once
the unit is shut off, then remove all attached peripherals.
This includes any external mice and ANY PCMCIA cards
that may be in the PCMCIA slots.
Reinstalling the Modem
-
Turn the unit on and
immediately start pressing the DEL key until the
BIOS screen is displayed.

Using the down arrow
key highlight Peripheral Setup. Hit Enter.

At the top of this
list you will see Com2(modem port). Set that
to 2F8H by using the PgDn or Minus(-)
key to toggle through the available options.

Next in the list you
will see Com1. Set that to 3F8H by
using the PgDn or Minus(-) key to
toggle through the available options.

Next in the list you
will see Com3. IF you
do not use the Infrared port on the unit then set this to Disabled.
Otherwise set that to 3E8H by using the PgDn
or Minus(-) key to toggle through the available options.

Now hit the Esc
key. Press the F10 key. It will ask you
to save settings and exit. Press the Y key
and hit Enter. The unit will now restart.

During the restart you
may see a New Hardware Found window pop up. Either it will detect
the modem and go away or it will bring up the New Hardware Wizard.
IF it brings up the New hardware Wizard click
Next. It will take you to the next window asking
whether you want to Search for the best driver or Display a list of
drivers. Click on Search for the best driver for your
device. Click Next. It will
display a list of locations. Remove the checkmarks from ALL
boxes. Click Next. It will tell
you windows could not find a driver for your device. Click Next.
Then click Finish. It will then load the windows
desktop.

If you did NOT
have to go through the Add New Hardware Wizard, then skip to the next
section labeled Testing the Modem Configuration.
Otherwise continue with this steps. Click on the Start
Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel.
From here double click on the System icon. This should
bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager
tab. Under Other Devices, highlight the LT Win Modem
and click on Properties. Next, click on the Driver tab.
Click on Update Driver. This will bring up the Update Device
Driver Wizard. Click on Next.

Select Display a list of all the drivers
in a specific location, and click on the Next button.

First you have to select a device. Scroll
down to Modem and click on the Next button.

In the next screen, click on the Have Disk
button. In the "Copy manufacturer's files from:" box, type in
d:\drivers\modem\lucent\1643 if you are using the Windows 98 CD.
If you are using the driver disk then type in a:\modem.
Then click on the OK button. If you are using the windows
98 CD then a list of two LT Win Modem selections will appear, If
you are using the driver disk then it will display a single LT Win
Modem. Select the Lower Listing if you have 2 listed and click
on the Next button. An Update Driver Warning will appear
stating that the driver you have chosen was not written specifically for
the selected hardware. Click on the Yes button.

In the next screen, Windows will now be ready
to install the selected driver. Click on the Next button.

Windows will then find a Wave Device for
Voice Modem. Click on Next. Again, select "Display a list
of all the drivers in a specific location," and click on the Next
button.

In the next screen, click on the Have Disk
button. In the "Copy manufacturer's files from:" box, type in
d:\drivers\modem\lucent\1643 or if you are using the driver disk
type in a:\modem and click on the OK button.
It will then find the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device. Click on the Next
button. Windows will then finish installing the device. Once completed,
click on the Finish button.

Windows will then say that it has finished
installing an updated driver for your hardware device. Click on the Finish
button.

The LT Win Modem Properties window will be
open. Click on Close from the driver Tab.
- The modem is now properly set up.
Testing the Modem Configuration
- Click on the Start Button, go up
to Settings, and over to Control Panel.
Double click on the Modems icon. It will
display a list on installed modems. You should only have LT
Win Modem in the list.
- Click on the Diagnostics
tab.
- The LT Win Modem should be listed next
to COM2. Highlight COM2 and
then click on the More Info button.
- This should bring back a window that says
Port Information. If you get the port information
window then the modem is setup properly.
