General Information: You can use the WinBook Restore CD for the Si2 in order to get the unit to boot into DOS mode so that you can start this process. The procedure does include letting the unit boot to the WinBook Restore CD for the Si2 but no data or programs that have been installed in the past will be removed. This process is used solely to restore corrupt windows files that cannot be automatically restored any other way. Each step should be followed as you read this Tech Article. Please start the process with all external hardware, and port replicator disconnected from the unit and the ac adapter being the only hardware attached. In order for you to complete this process you will need the following items The WinBook Si2 Restore CD Windows Millennium Product Key (located on the bar-code sticker on the bottom of the unit or on the Getting Started With Windows Millennium book on the front cover.) Changing the boot sequence on the WinBook Si2 1. Press the power button to turn the unit on, as the video shows up on the screen you will see the message in the lower left corner of the screen that says: Press F2 for setup. At this point you need to press and release the F2 key on the keyboard. 2. The Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility will appear. Use the Right Arrow Key to move to the Boot menu (located at the top of the screen). 3. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight the option listing ATAPI CD-ROM Drive. Using the Shift and the + key (located on the top part of the key next to the Backspace ) press them together until the ATAPI CD-ROM Drive listing is at the top of the list. 4. At this point you need to insert the WinBook Si2 Restore CD into the CD-ROM drive of the unit and close the CD-ROM tray. 5. Press the F10 key on the keyboard to save changes. When asked if you wish to save the settings press the Y key and then press the Enter key. Booting the WinBook Si2 1. This process will start as soon as the above procedure has been done. The unit will go through the boot up process using the WinBook Si2 Restore CD. 2. When the unit boots and gets to the screen that has the Warning message on it just click on the OK button. 3. There will be another screen that shows with three (3) icons in a window. At this point you need to double click the icon that says Exit To DOS. 4. You should now be at the DOS prompt that looks like this A:\> 5. Type in the following command at that prompt C: and then press the Enter key. At this point you should remove the WinBook Si2 Restore CD from the CD-ROM drive. 6. You should now have a prompt that looks like this C:\> 7. At that prompt type in the following command CD windows\options\cabs then press the Enter key. Which will give you a prompt that looks like this C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS> 8. At that prompt type in SETUP and then press the Enter key two (2) times. This will begin the Scandisk Utility and it will do a quick scan of the hard drive to verify that it is okay before the Microsoft Windows Millennium Setup begins. 9. From this point the process is automated. If you leave the computer alone it will go through the process on it's own without user intervention until it gets to the user information screen. The unit will reboot itself a few times throughout the process of the reinstallation. 10. When the setup gets to the screen for User Information , enter in your user information and click on the Next button. The Microsoft Licensing Agreement screen will now appear. Click on the white circle next to the statement I accept the Agreement, after you have read the agreement then click the Next button. The Windows Product Key window will now appear. If the product key doesn't show up in the white areas, type it in and then click on the Next button. 11. At the next screen that appears click the Finish button. The computer will make a few final adjustments and then it will reboot itself again. When it boots back up it will update system settings. It may take it a while to do this. After it is done it will again reboot itself. 12. When the unit boots up this time, you will then be at the normal Microsoft Windows Millennium desktop and it is now ready to use again. |
