Information on Device Manager: Device manager is a very handy tool for trouble-shooting and correcting hardware related problems in Windows 2000. It is almost identical in functionality to the device manager in Windows 95, 98, and ME. It gives you basic information as to rather or not a device is functioning properly, the settings for the device. And in some instances the resources being used by the device (Input / output addresses, Interupt Requests, and DMA channels).

  • From device manager you can load, unload or update device drivers. You also have the ability to print a summary of all device information for the computer.

Note: device will only be listed for those that are currently recognized by windows. This will include any plug and play devices and any other devices that have been installed with add remove hardware component.

ACCESSING WINDOWS 2000 DEVICE MANAGER

There are several different methods for accessing the device manager listed below are the most common.

 Accessing Device Manager using Microsoft Mannagement Console

  1. With the right button on your mouse or touchpad click one time on the My Computer Icon. This will bring up a pop up menu.
  2. On the pop up menu, left click one time on time on the line item for Manage.
  3. This will bring up the computer management console. In the left window pane you will see a number of different line items. Find the one titled Device Manager and double left click on it.
  4. You will then see in the right side pane of the computer console the Device Manager with various listing for all the devices currently recognized by Windows 2000

Accessing Device Manager using Control Panel 

  1. Press the Start button
  2. Go to Setting, a new menu will pop out to the left.
  3. Click on Control Panel.
  4. When the control panel comes up find the icon that says System and double click it.
  5. The system properties box will come up, click on the Hardware tab.
  6. In approx the middle of the hardware page and the right hand side you will see a button labeled Device Manager. Click on this button and it will open the device manager.
