Installing a Printer:

  1. Open the Control Panel, then open the Printers folder, double click on Add Printer.

  2. The Add Printer Wizard will open, click Next.

  3. Choose Local Printer if the printer is directly attached to the computer, click Next.

  4. Next the Wizard will ask where this printer is attached, most likely this will be the LPT 1 Port (the standard printer port), choose this and click Next.

  5. Next it will want a manufacturer and model, if your manufacture or model is not listed you may have a disk that came with the computer (make sure this is for Windows 2000 if it is not you will need to get a Windows 2000 printer driver from your manufacturer) insert the disk and click have disk the documentation that came with the printer should tell you where the printer driver is located on the disk (i.e. a:\win2k\printer), choose the make and model then click Next.

  6. The Wizard will want a name for the printer (i.e. work or home, inkjet or laser), it will also want to know if you intend it to be your default printer. If so check Yes to use it as a default printer, then click Next.

  7. If you intend to share this printer with other computers on a network select Share as then give the printer a name, click Next.

  8. If you want to put a location or comments about the printer for others to see you can enter those now, click Next.

  9. Now you may print a test page if you choose then click next, the install of the printer is complete now click Finish.

To share this Printer with a Windows 95, 98, 98se, or Millennium (Windows 9x) computer:

  1. Check to make sure the Network is set up and the printer is installed on the Windows 9x machine, you also need to share the windows directory on your Windows 9x computer.

  2. On the Windows 2000 computer, open Control Panel then open the Printers folder.

  3. Right click on the printer that you want to share with the other operating system, left click on Properties.

  4. The second tab will be called Sharing, select that, then click Additional drivers.

  5. Put check marks in the Intel Windows 95 or 98 to share for Windows 95, 98, 98SE, and/or Millennium, then click Ok.

  6. The computer will ask for a Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM, just click Ok.

  7. The computer will ask for the location of the printer.inf, where it says copy files from type \\<computer name of 9x machine>\windows\inf. ( <computer name...> is the name of computer as is when browsing your network.) Note: Depending on the speed of your network and the amount of traffic, this may take a minute or two.

  8. Click Ok. It will ask for a .drv file next. Type \\<computer name of 9x machine>\windows\system, then click Ok.

  9. Click Close and it is now shared with all your Windows 9x machines.
