NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

This article describes how to reinstall or attempt to repair the Windows operating system on the Winbook V series using either the recovery partition or the recovery DVD/CDs.

  1. To begin the recovery via the built in recovery partition on the hard drive either restart or power on your notebook. When you are prompted to do so, press the F10 key. You will only have about 3 seconds to do this. To begin the recovery via the DVD or CDs, insert the DVD or CD 1 into the optical drive and then restart your computer. Unless you restart the computer after inserting the disk, the recovery program will not launch. When you're prompted to do so, press the R key. If the computer will not boot to the CD or DVD, please contact Technical Support at (800)468-1225.
  2. When the recovery program starts please take time to review the system recovery notice. When you're ready to continue click on the "I Agree" button. Clicking on the "I Disagree" button will restart the computer.
  3. After clicking on the "I Agree" button you now be able to select the type of recovery you wish to run.

Non-Destructive System Recovery

By default the recovery program will run a Non-Destructive recovery which will reinstall the factory original applications, drivers, and operating system without harming your personal data files. If your unit did not ship with Windows XP Service pack 2 installed and you have upgraded to Service Pack 2 then a non-destructive recovery will not work on your system. You will have to use a recovery no-format.

The following two options are reached by clicking on the "Advanced Options" tab

System Recovery - No Format

This option installs a new operating system while preserving your data. However, any applications you've installed will need to be reinstalled. Your data files will be moved to the directory "C:\My old disk structure". System Recovery - Quick Format This option will erase the user partition and ALL your personal data will be lost. If possible, before using this option, try to back up your personal data. When completed, this option will return the system to its factory original condition with Windows XP and all the drivers installed.

If you have any questions about using the system recovery partition or recovery CDs/DVD, or if you need to order a replacement recovery CD/DVD please contact Technical Support.
