This article will describe the connecting of an external monitor using the VGA or S-video ports. Also the article will explain two methods of configuring the W500 series notebook to use the external monitor for use as a dual display.

Method 1

  1. With the computer turned off, connect the VGA cable or the S-video cable from the external monitor to the notebook

  2. Turn the notebook on by pressing the power button.
  3. Once the notebook is started into Windows, Press the FN + F8 keys
  • Press the FN + F8 once will enable the external monitor as the primary monitor.
  • Press the FN + F8 a second time will enable the notebook and the external monitor to be configured for dual display.
  • Press the FN + F8 a third time will make the notebook LCD display the primary monitor.

Method 2

  1. With the computer turned off, connect the VGA cable or the S-video cable from the external monitor to the notebook.

  2. Turn the notebook on by pressing the power button.
  3. Click on Start and then click on Control Panel
  4. If the Control Panel is in the Classic view, double click on the Intel® GMA Driver for Mobile icon and proceed to Step 6
  5. If the Control Panel is in Category view, click on Appearance and Themes.
    • Under the option that states “pick a Control Panel icon” Click on Display
    • Select the Settings Tab and then click on the Advanced button
    • Select Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver tab and click on the Graphics Properties button.
  6. This will display the Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS window.
    Note: Be sure the Devices Tab is selected.

  8. Click on the appropriate dual or single display option. For example the Extended Desktop.

  9. Select the Primary and Secondary devices and then click on the Device Settings button.
  10. The Device Settings window will open. With this window open the desired screen resolution can be selected.

  11. After selecting the desired screen resolution click the OK button.
  12. Then click the Apply button for the changes to take affect.
  13. Finally close the Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS window.
