Subject: Installing Windows XP Pro Upgrade on the WinBook XL2/XL3 and updating ESS Modem

You will need the following things to install Windows XP on this machine:

WinBook XL2/XL3 Restore CD
Windows XP CD (Not an Upgrade)
Windows XP Product ID Key
ESS Audio/ Modem update for Windows XP

Changing The Boot Sequence to allow booting from the Windows 98 CD

As the computer is starting up, you will see the message Press DEL for Setup. Press the DEL key until you see the blue Setup Screen. Use the Down Arrow key to move to the Advanced CMOS Setup menu. Press the ENTER key once. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight BOOT SEQUENCE. Press the PgUp key until the setting is CD-ROM,A:,C:. Press the ESC key once. Press the F10 key once. When asked if you wish to save changes, press Y and then Enter.

  1. Power up the laptop with the WinBook restore cd in the machine. The machine will boot to the CD and bring you to the WinBook support menu. Select the FDISK option and press the ENTER key.
  2. Press the ENTER key once.
  3. It will ask you if you want to enable large disk support. Press Y and press Enter.
  4. Choose option 3, Delete partition or Logical DOS drive.
  5. Choose option 1, Delete DOS Partition.
  6. Select the partition you want to delete. You are typically going to delete partition 1 C: PRI-DOS partition. Enter the Volume Label for the drive exactly as listed in the FDISK menu and press Enter. (Note: If there is nothing listed under volume label, just press Enter.)
  7. When prompted, "Are you sure (Y/N)," press Y and press Enter. After you confirm the deletion, the program will then tell you that the Primary DOS partition is deleted.
  8. Press the ESC key.
  9. You will now be on the first screen of FDISK. Choose option 3, Delete partition or Logical DOS drive.
  10. Choose option 4, Delete NON-DOS Partition.
  11. Select the partition you want to delete and press ENTER. You are typically going to delete partition 1 NON-DOS partition.
  12. The next prompt will ask, "Do you wish to continue (Y/N)" Choose Y and press ENTER. A prompt will come up saying Non-Dos partition deleted.
  13. Press the ESC key once.
  14. You will now be on the first screen of FDISK. Choose option 1, Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive.
  15. Choose option 1 Create Primary DOS Partition.
  16. FDISK will then verify the drive integrity for a couple of seconds. When it asks you if you want the maximum available size, press Y and press Enter. It will then verify the drive integrity one more time and then say you must restart your system for your changes to take effect.
  17. Press ESC to exit FDISK. This will take you back to the restore cd menu.

Restoring the Hard Drive using the Restore CD.

Note: This is recommended to prevent any memory or installation errors. Errors were encountered when tested with a blank hard drive.

WARNING! Make sure that there are no PCMCIA cards plugged into the system when attempting to restore the image on the hard drive. Having cards in at this time could cause the system to become unstable and crash.

Note: If you see a message indicating that you have an Invalid Image, you may have the incorrect BIOS for the Restore Cd that you are using. If you receive this message, please contact Technical Support for assistance with this.

  1. Ensure that the XL2 Restore CD is in the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
  2. At the main menu press the option number (depending on restore version) to begin the image restore process.
  3. At the warning screen, press the spacebar key to continue.
  4. Click on the restore button. Then click on the yes button.
  5. Your machine will then begin the process of installing the Win98 master image on to your hard drive.
  6. When the image has completely copied to the hard drive, it will prompt you to press ctrl+alt+del to restart your system. When you see this message, remove the restore CD from your CD-ROM drive. The press ctrl+alt+del to restart the computer.
  7. Once windows loads, it will prompt you to insert your registration information (Name, Windows Product Key, and Time Zone Settings). Once this information has been inserted Win98 will be ready for use.

Installing Windows XP Pro

WARNING! Make sure that there are no PCMCIA cards plugged into the system when attempting to restore the image on the hard drive. Having cards in at this time could cause the system to become unstable and crash.

  1. After Windows is loaded, insert your Windows XP Pro CD. The Welcome Screen will come up. Click on INSTALL WINDOWS XP.
  2. On the Installation Type click the down arrow to Upgrade (Recommended) and press NEXT.
  3. The XP Licensing Agreement will come up. Click on I ACCEPT THIS AGREEMENT to agree. (If you do not agree, the install will cease.) Click NEXT.
  4. Enter in your 25-character product id and then click NEXT.
  5. At the Upgrade Report windows click the Recommended option to see what software issues you may have. Click NEXT.
  6. At The Get Updated Setup Files click on No, skip this step, and continue installing Windows. Click on NEXT.
  7. Setup will continue to run and copy installation files. The unit will restart.
  8. When it boots back up DO NOT BOOT FROM CD-ROM. Setup will continue to run its own.
  9. Setup will ask for the name of the user. Insert the information and press NEXT.
  10. Windows will install. Follow prompts to get to desktop. Once at the desktop proceed to updating the ESS.

Updating ESS Sound/Modem Card

  1. Download updated ESS Modem driver and save to disk in zipped form. (You will need zip software such as Win Zip)
  2. Double click MY COMPUTER.
  3. Double click the C drive.
  4. Create a folder and name it ESS Upgrade.
  5. Copy the 2188h025 zipped file to that folder.
  6. Open the ESS Upgrade folder. Right click on the file and click on EXTRACT ALL.
  7. Click on NEXT at the Extraction Wizard.
  8. The default folder C:\ESS Upgrade\2188h025 folder will be the default. Click NEXT.
  9. Click FINISH.
  10. Next, double click the SETUP.
  11. At the ESS Maestro 2EM Utility setup window click NEXT.
  12. A warning box stating this driver has not passed the Logo test. Click CONTINUE ANYWAY.
  13. A series of new devices will be found. A box stating the Audio Driver Installed. Click OK.
  14. The modem will be found and a warning box stating this driver has not passed the Logo test. Click CONTINUE ANYWAY.
  15. A box stating the Modem Driver Installed. Click OK.
  16. At the Setup Complete Yes to restart should be selected. Click Finish. The modem should be ready to use.
