If you are having problems running a program in Windows XP that you've used in a previous addition of Windows you may be able to run that program in Compatibility Mode. To do this use the Program Compatibility Wizard built in to Windows XP.

  1. To start the Program Compatibility Wizard if you are using the Windows XP Desktop theme (the default theme), click Start, point at All Programs, point at Accessories and click Program Compatibility Wizard. To start the Program Compatibility Wizard if you are using the Windows Classic Desktop theme, click Start, point at Programs, point at Accessories and click on Program Compatibility Wizard.
  2. The Help and Support Center opens on the Program Compatibility Wizard description screen, just click Next.
  3. On the following screen you are asked how you wish to locate the program.
    1. If the program was for Windows 95 or a later version, and you were able to install it, you should be able to use the "I want to choose from a list of programs" option. The following screen will show you a list of programs installed, you would select the program from the list and click Next.
    2. If you were unable to install the program or it runs from the CD you would want to use "I want to use the program in the CD-ROM drive" option.
    3. The last option is to Locate the program manually. On the following screen click Browse and locate the file that starts the program or type in the path to it and click Next.

  4. On the next screen you should select the operating system recommended for the program or one that is worked correctly on previously and click Next.

  5. There are three options on the following screen. To reduce to color setting to 256, to reduce the screen area to 640 X 480, or to disable the visual themes. Generally, these setting are typically for game programs or educational programs.

  6. The next screen is a confirmation of the settings you selected. If they are correct, click Next to test the settings. If not, click Back and make the corrections or additional settings you desire.
  7. Windows will attempt to launch the program and test the settings. Once you have determined if the program is operating correctly or not, close the program.
  8. The following screen asks if the program worked correctly. If it worked correctly you can select Yes, set this program to always use these compatibility settings. If not, you can choose No, try different compatibility setting and see if other settings will work, or choose No, I am finished trying compatibility settings. Click Next when you have made your choice.

  9. The next screen asks if you would like to send the data about the compatibility settings to Microsoft, choose Yes or No and click Next.
  10. Click Finish on the final screen.
