NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

Before beginning this process you should back up any data on your computer that you would be concerned about losing.

If you have any question about the compatibility of any of your hardware or software you can run the system compatibility check available on the upgrade CD. Microsoft also maintains a database of compatible hardware and software at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/ . Any questionable items should be removed prior to attempting the upgrade.

You will need to be logged on as an administrator or will need the user name and password of an account with administrator privileges to run the upgrade.

1. Close any open applications and insert the Windows XP Upgrade CD in the CD-ROM drive.
2. The Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP windows will open and below the “What do you want to do?” click on the arrow next to Install Windows XP.
3. The next window is Welcome to Windows Setup. Next to Installlation Type, ensure that it says Upgrade (Recommended) and click the Next button.
4. The next window to come up is the license agreement. You should read the license agreement and if you wish to proceed click on the radio button next to I accept this agreement and click Next.
5. The product key window will come up next. Enter the product key supplied with your upgrade CD, and click Next.
6. On the next window you are given a choice to get updated setup files. You can get the Windows XP updates after the installation completes, click the radio button next to “No, skip this step and continue installing Windows” and click Next.
7. The setup process will begin and after a short delay the computer will restart and continue the installation process. This process is automated and normally does not require any input from you until upgrade has completed.
8. On the last reboot you will be prompted for several actions. What they are will depend on how Windows 2000 was configured. At a minimum, you will be prompted to do the Windows Activation and to set up an internet connection. You do not have to do either of these at this time if you do not want to. If you already have an internet connection you should skip this step.
