To complete this procedure you will need the following materials.

  • WinBook XP5 Pro Support Diskette
  • Microsoft Windows 95 CD
  • Microsoft Windows 95 users manual with Product ID

Delete existing Hard drive partition and creating a new partition:

  1. Turn off the computer and make sure the Floppy disk drive is in the computer.
  2. Place the WinBook Windows 95 Boot Disk in the drive and turn the computer back on.
  3. When presented with the WinBook utility menu select option 1 for FDISK.
  4. When prompted press a key to continue.
  5. Select Y to enable 32bit FAT.
  6. Select 3 to delete existing DOS partition.
  7. Select 1 to delete the PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
  8. Press 1 to select PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
  9. Press ENTER when prompted for VOLUME LABEL.
  10. Select Y to verify deletion of the partition.
  11. Press ESC once to go back to the main menu.
  12. Select 1 to CREATE DOS PARTITION.
  13. Select 1 for PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
  14. Select Y for maximum available partition size.
  15. The new DOS partition has now been created press ESC to exit FDISK.
  16. Turn off the computer.
  17. Wait 10 seconds, then turn on the computer back on.

Format hard drive and copy installation files:

  1. From the utility menu select 3 to FORMAT the hard drive and transfer system files.
  2. When prompted press any key to continue.
  3. Select Y to proceed with format (format will take roughly 10-15minutes).
  4. Press ENTER when prompted for VOLUME LABEL
  5. Reboot the computer.
  6. From the utility menu select 11 to REINSTALL WINDOWS 95. This process will take a few minutes.
  7. You will be prompted to power down the unit and place the CD-ROM drive in to the computer.

Install Windows 95 operating system:

  1. Power up the system and insert the Microsoft Windows 95 CD and wait approximately 20-30 seconds to allow the CD-ROM drive to spin up
  2. Press ENTER and setup will copy files needed for the installation to your hard drive (this will take a few minutes). Press ENTER when complete.
  3. Windows 95 installation will now begin. Follow the on screen instructions.
  4. Make sure you have your "Introducing Windows95 " manual handy. You will be prompted to enter the Product ID number that is listed on the Certificate of Authenticity.

Set display properties:

  1. Press Start, then go to Settings, and then press Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double click on the Display icon.
  4. Click on the Settings tab.
  5. Change the Screen Area from 640X480 to 800X600.
  6. Click the Apply button.
  7. When asked to change the monitor type, click on the Yes button.
  8. Under the Models find the Laptop Display Panel (800X600) entry.
  9. Click the OK button.
  10. Click the OK button again.
  11. Click on the OK again to keep the new settings.
  12. Finally click on the OK button to close the display properties.

Reinstall the sound card driver:

  1. Press Start, then go to Settings, and then press Control Panel.
  2. Double Click on the System icon.
  3. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  4. You should see ? - Other Devices in the device listing.
  5. Double click on Other devices so that you see a sub category which says Unknown Device. Click on the Unknown Device to highlight it, then click on Remove (on the bottom of the System Properties window).
  6. Go to the Start button and click shutdown.
  7. On the Shutdown menu, select restart the computer.
  8. When unit is rebooting Windows 95 will find new hardware called Unknown Device and ask for a driver disk. Get the Driver disk, that came with your WinBook, labeled "Windows 95 Drivers for WinBook XP5 Pro".
  9. Insert driver disk in floppy drive, and click on next. Windows will not find the driver on the disk. You will be given an option for searching Other locations.
  10. Click on Other Locations and it will give you a field in which to type the path. Type a:\audio in the path area and click on OK. Click on the Next button.
  11. The computer will find the ESS 1888 Audio drive and you should now prompt you to select Finish to complete the installation.
  12. You will then be prompted to restart the computer for the changes to take effect. Click on Yes, restart my computer now.
  13. Once the computer is restarted you should have sound.

Enable PCMCIA support:

  1. Press Start, then go to settings, and then press Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the System icon.
  3. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  4. You should see an X through the icon next to Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA bridge.
  5. Double click on Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA bridge.
  6. Click on Disable in this hardware profile, this should remove the check mark.
  7. Make sure there is a check mark in Exists in all hardware profiles, if not, click in this box to put the check mark in it.
  8. Click on OK.
  9. Make sure the No is highlighted then, click on the Next icon from the Welcome to the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard screen.
  10. Make sure the No is highlighted then, click on the Next icon from the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard screen.
  11. Click on the Finish button.
  12. Click on the Yes button to shut down your computer now.
  13. Power the computer back on and once it is done booting, insert your PCMCIA card.
  14. You will then be prompted that Windows has found new hardware. Windows will then prompt you to insert a disk containing drivers for your PCMCIA card. At this point, follow the instructions that came with your PCMCIA card and finish the installation.
