To complete this procedure you will need the following materials:

  • Windows 95 Boot Disk For WinBook Notebook Computers

  • WinBook FX (MP7) Video Drivers CT 65550/Audio Drivers ESS 1878

  • Microsoft Infrared Driver ver 2.0 (W95ir.exe)

  • Microsoft Windows 95 CD

  • Microsoft Windows 95 users manual with Product ID

Deleting Windows:

  1. Put the WinBook Windows 95 Boot Disk in the floppy drive and power up the laptop.
  2. When the Utility Disk menu appears type C:\ and press Enter. This will bring you to a C:\> prompt.
  3. Type copy c:\windows\command\deltree.exe and press enter.
  4. Type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DELTREE C:\WINDOWS and press enter.
  5. When the computer asks you to confirm deletion press Y for yes.
  6. It will take a few minutes to delete the Windows directory.
  7. Turn off your computer.
  8. Remove any and all external devices from the computer, except the A/C adapter.
  9. With the boot disk still in the floppy drive, turn on the computer.
  10. When the Utility Disk menu appears, choose option 11.
  11. Please wait while files are copied to your hard drive. When the computer is finished copying, power down.

Install Windows 95 Operating System:

  1. Turn on the computer and insert the Microsoft Windows 95 CD and wait approximately 20-30 seconds to allow the CD-ROM drive to spin up
  2. Press ENTER and setup will copy files needed for installation to your hard drive (this will take a few minutes). Press ENTER when this is completed.
  3. Windows 95 installation will now begin. Follow the on screen instructions.
  4. NOTES:
    1. When prompted for type of installation (Setup Options) choose Typical
    2. It is useful to record the User Information exactly as you entered it for later reference.
    3. When asked if you wish to create a startup disk, answer No. You can create one later.
    4. When prompted for the devices attached to the unit click the box next to sound, audio or video capture card
    5. During setup when asked for the printer to install, if the drivers are on diskette or you don’t have a printer to install choose Cancel.
  5. Once installation of Windows 95 is complete click Start, Shutdown, and Yes to power down the unit. Replace the CD-ROM module with the floppy disk drive module, and power the unit up.

Setup Hard Drive Controller

  1. From the Start menu, choose Settings, then choose Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, double-click on the System icon.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  4. Double-click on Hard Disk Controllers.
  5. Double-click on Standard Dual IDE Controller.
  6. Click the Driver tab and then click the Update Driver button.
  7. Choose No, select driver from list and then click the Next button.
  8. Select Show all hardware and then choose Intel under manufacturers.
  9. On the right side, choose the Intel 82371FB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller and click Finish.
  10. Click Yes when asked if you want to restart the computer.

Set Display Properties

  1. From the Start menu, choose Settings, then choose Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel double-click on the System icon.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab at top of the System Properties window.
  4. Double-click Display Adapter
  5. Double-click on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA).
  6. Click the Driver tab and then click on the Update Driver button.
  7. Put the WinBook Audio/Video Driver disk in the floppy disk drive and click the Next button.
  8. Click the Other Locations button and type a:\ct65550 in the Location box. Then click OK and then click Finish.
  9. When prompted to insert the disk labeled Chips and Technologies Windows 95 Driver Disk click OK.
  10. Type a:\ct65550 in the Copy files from: box, when prompted for the location of the chips.drv file, and then click OK.
  11. Remove the floppy disk from the drive and click Yes to restart computer.
  12. Once the computer has rebooted, click the Start button, and then choose Settings. Then click Control Panel.
  13. Double-click the Display icon.
  14. Click on the Settings tab.
  15. Under Desktop area, click on the slider and press the right arrow key once to move it to 800x600 and then click Apply.
  16. Press ENTER to specify what type of monitor you have. The standard monitor type, Laptop Display Panel (1024x768) should already be selected. Press ENTER.
  17. You will receive a warning that Windows is going to adjust your display settings. Press ENTER and then click the Yes button to keep the settings.
  18. Under Color palette click the down arrow to the right of 256 Color. Select High Color (16 bit) and click Apply.
  19. Choose Apply setting without restarting? and click OK. Then press ENTER so Windows will readjust your display settings. Then click Yes to keep the changes.
  20. Click OK on the Display Properties Box to close it.

Install the Sound Driver

  1. From the Start menu, choose Settings, then choose Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel double-click on the System icon.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab at top of the System Properties window.
  4. If necessary, scroll down to Sound Video and Game Controllers.
  5. If there is a + symbol next to Sound Video and Game Controllers, click on it.
  6. Select each device listed under Sound Video and Game Controllers, and remove it. You will have to remove each device one at a time. NOTE: Do NOT remove the Game Port Joystick.
  7. Double-click on Other Devices. Double-click on the Unknown device. Click the Driver Tab and then click the Update Driver button.
  8. Insert the WinBook Audio/Video driver disk and click Next to let Windows 95 search for the driver, then click Other Locations and enter A:\ESS1878 in the Location box and then click Finish.
  9. Click OK in the window that appears and type A:\ESS1878 for the location of ‘es1878.vxd’ and then click OK. The driver will install and the ESS 1878 PnP Audio Drive will be found and installed. Click the Close button to finish.

Enable PCMCIA Support

  1. If you closed the System Properties window, click the Start button and choose Settings. Then click Control Panel.
  2. Click the System Icon.
  3. Click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the window.
  4. You should see a red X through the icon next to Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA Bridge.
  5. Double click on Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA bridge.
  6. Click the check box next to Disable in this hardware profile, to remove the check mark.
  7. Click the OK button.
  8. Click the Next button from the Welcome to the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard screen.
  9. On the next screen, click the Next button again.
  10. Click the Finish button.
  11. Click the Yes button to shut down your system now.
  12. Make sure there is not a disk in the floppy drive, and then turn on your computer.

Install WinBook Modem Driver

  1. Insert the Windows 95 Boot Disk for WinBook Notebook Computers into the floppy drive.
  2. From the Start menu, choose Run...
  3. In the Open box type A:\10.BAT and click OK.
  4. An MS-DOS window will be opened and 10.BAT will run. When completed you will see the WinBook Utility menu and the Title Bar will say Finished – 10. Close the window when it is finished.
  5. From the Start menu, choose Settings, then click Control Panel.
  6. In the Control Panel, double-click the System icon.
  7. Click the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties window.
  8. Double-click modem.
  9. Double-click on Standard 28800 BPS Modem
  10. Click on the Driver tab, at the top of the window.
  11. Click on the Update Driver button.
  12. Select No, select from list and then click the Next button.
  13. Select Show all hardware.
  14. Choose WinBook Computer Corp (NOT WinBook) from the list of Manufacturers.
  15. Under Models, choose the WinBook FX V.34.
  16. Click the Close button to close modem properties.
  17. Click Close again to close system properties.

NOTE: The modem will still be displayed as a Standard 28800 BPS modem, however, the driver tab will show WinBook FX V.34 with a date of 9-10-96.

Install the Infrared Driver

  1. You will need the Microsoft Infrared Device Driver version 2.0. It is available from www.microsoft.com or through the WinBook Tech Support website, at www.winbookcorp.com.
  2. From the Start menu choose Run.
  3. You will need to know where you placed the file. In the Open box, type the drive, directory and the name of the file. For example, if the file was located on your hard drive, in a directory called temp, you would type c:\temp\w95ir.exe.
  4. Install to the default directory C:\MSIR20
  5. Click Start, Run and in the Open box type c:\msir20\setup.exe and press ENTER.
  6. Follow the on screen instructions.

NOTES:

  1. The physical port to assign the infrared device to is com3

  2. Install the device using the defaults suggested.

Creating Windows 95 Startup Disk

  1. Make sure you have the floppy drive module in your computer and a blank 1.44 MB diskette with a blank label.
  2. From the Start menu, choose Settings, and click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs Icon.
  4. Click the Startup Disk tab at the top of the Add/Remove Programs Properties window.
  5. Click on the Create Disk button. It will take a moment for the necessary files to be prepared.
  6. Place the disk in the drive and click OK when prompted.
  7. Once the operation has completed remove the disk from the drive and push the right protect tab on the disk up (this will prevent viruses from infecting the disk).

Installing Additional Components

There are a number of additional components the Windows does not install by default. These include such things as Microsoft Fax, Games, Multimedia Sound Schemes, and a number of others. The following gives the general procedures for installing or uninstalling additional components:

  1. From the Start menu, choose Settings, then click Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Click on the Windows Setup tab at the top of the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. You will now see the list of components you may add or remove. Many of these components have additional items. By double-clicking each component heading, you can see the additional items.
  4. To add a component, place a check mark in the box to the left of the components. This is done by clicking the box to the left of the component name. To remove a component clear the check box. A gray box with a check mark in it means only some of the available components are selected.

    • NOTE: If you are not sure what that component is or does, look in the Description box below after clicking on the component (not the box).
  5. When you are finished adding or removing components, click the Apply button on the Add/Remove Programs box. The necessary software will be copied and if it is necessary to restart Windows, you will be prompted to do so. If not, click OK to finish the process.
