Subject: Reinstalling Windows 95 on your WinBook FX (MP7) Computer

To complete this procedure you will need the following materials:

    • Windows 95 Boot Disk For WinBook Notebook Computers Version 2.40
    • WinBook FX (MP7) Video Drivers CT 65550/Audio Drivers ESS 1878
    • Microsoft Infrared Driver ver 2.0 (W95ir.exe)
    • Microsoft Windows 95 CD
    • Microsoft Windows 95 users manual with Product ID

Delete existing Hard drive partition:

  1. Boot to the WinBook support diskette
  2. When presented with the WinBook Utility menu select option '1' for FDISK
  3. When prompted press a key to continue
  4. Select 'Y' to enable large disk support.
  5. Select '3' to delete existing DOS partition.
  6. Select '1' to select PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
  7. When prompted for VOLUME LABEL look at the volume label in the "information for current fixed disk," if it is blank press ENTER. If there is a information there enter it exactly as it is under volume label, and press ENTER.
  8. Select 'Y' to verify deletion of the partition
  9. The primary DOS partition has been deleted. Press 'ESC' three times and the system should reboot to the utility menu

Create a new DOS partition:

  1. From the utility menu select '1' for FDISK
  2. When prompted press any key to continue
  3. Select 'Y' to enable large disk support. (This will enable 32 bit FAT).
  4. Select '1' to CREATE DOS PARTITION
  5. Select '1' for PRIMARY DOS PARTITION
  6. Select 'Y' for maximum available partition size
  7. The new DOS partition has now been created press 'ESC' to exit FDISK and reboot to the utility menu.

Format hard drive and copy installation files:

  1. From the utility menu select '3' to FORMAT the hard drive and transfer system files
  2. When prompted press any key to continue
  3. Select 'Y' to proceed with format (format will take a few minutes)
  4. Press ENTER when prompted for VOLUME LABEL
  5. From the utility menu select '11' to REINSTALL WINDOWS 95
  6. Please wait while files are being copied to you hard drive
  7. After the files have been copied to your hard drive you will be prompted to power the system off and remove the floppy drive and insert the CD-ROM module. Do so at this time.

Install Windows 95 operating system:

  1. Power up the system and insert the Microsoft Windows 95 CD and wait approximately 20-30 seconds to allow the CD-ROM drive to spin up
  2. Press ENTER and setup will copy files needed for the installation to your hard drive (this will take a few minutes). Press ENTER when complete
  3. Windows 95 installation will now begin. Follow the on screen instructions.
  4. NOTES:
    1. When prompted for type of installation (Setup Options) choose "Typical"
    2. It is useful to record the "User Information" exactly as you entered it for later reference.
    3. When asked if you wish to create a startup disk answer "No." You can create one later.
    4. When prompted for the devices attached to the unit click the box next to "sound, audio or video capture card"
    5. During setup when asked for the printer to install, if the drivers are on diskette or you don't have a printer to install choose Cancel.

    Once installation of Windows 95 is complete click Start, Shutdown, and Yes to power down the unit. Replace the CD-ROM module with the floppy disk drive module, and power the unit up.

Setup Hard drive controller:

  1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon
  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click it with your left mouse button
  3. Choose the Device Manager tab.
  4. Double click on Hard disk controllers.
  5. Double click on Standard Dual IDE Controller
  6. Choose the Driver tab and click on the Update Driver button.
  7. Choose "No, select driver from list" and click Next.
  8. Choose "Show all hardware" and select Intel under manufacturers and select the Intel 82371FB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller and click Finish.
  9. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer.

Set display properties:

  1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon
  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click it with your left mouse button
  3. Choose the Device Manager tab.
  4. Double click on the Display adapters.
  5. Double Click on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA).
  6. Select the Driver tab and click on the Update Driver Button.
  7. Put the WinBook Audio Video Driver disk in the floppy disk drive and click Next.
  8. Click the Other Locations button and type "a:\ct65550" in the Location box and click OK and then click Finish.
  9. When prompted to insert disk labeled 'Chips and Technologies Windows 95 Driver Disk' click OK
  10. Enter "a:\ct65550" in the "Copy files from:" box, when prompted for the location of the "chips.drv" file, and click OK.
  11. Remove the floppy disk from the drive and click Yes to restart computer
  12. Once the computer has rebooted, right click on a clear area of the desk top and choose Properties from the menu.
  13. Choose the Settings tab.
  14. Under Desktop area, click on the pointer and press the right arrow key once to move it to 800x600 and click Apply.
  15. Press ENTER to specify what type of monitor you have. The standard monitor type Laptop Display Panel (1024x768) should already be selected. Press ENTER.
  16. You will receive warning that Windows is going to adjust your display settings. Press ENTER and then click the Yes button to keep the settings.
  17. Under Color palette click the arrow to the right of 256 Color. Select High Color (16 bit) and click Apply.
  18. Choose "Apply setting without restarting?" and click OK and press ENTER so Windows will readjust your display settings and click Yes to keep the changes.
  19. Click OK on the Display Properties Box to close it.

Install the Sound Driver

  1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon
  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click it with your left mouse button
  3. If necessary, scroll down to Sound Video and Game Controllers.
  4. Click on each item listed other than the Game Port Joystick, then click, Remove and press ENTER.
  5. Double-click on Other Devices. Double click on the Unknown device. Select the Driver Tab and click on Update Driver.
  6. Insert the WinBook Audio and Video driver disk and click Next to let Windows 95 search for the driver, then click Other Locations and enter "a:\ess1878" in the Location box and click Finish.
  7. Click OK on the box that appears and enter "a:\ess1878 for the location of 'es1878.vxd' and click OK. The driver will install and the ESS 1878 Audio Drive will be found and installed. Click the Close button

Enable PCMCIA support:

  1. If you closed the System Properties after installing the sound card, right click on the "My Computer" icon
  2. Click on "Properties" from the menu
  3. Click on the "Device Manager" tab
  4. You should see a "X" through the icon next to "Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA bridge"
  5. Double click on "Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA bridge"
  6. Click on the "Disable in this hardware profile", to remove the check mark
  7. Click on 'OK'
  8. Select the "Next" icon from the "Welcome to the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard" screen
  9. Select the "Next" icon from the "PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard" screen
  10. Select the "Finish" button
  11. Select the "Yes" button to shut down your system now
  12. Ensure there is not a disk in the floppy disk drive and turn on your system

Install WinBook Modem Driver:

  1. Insert the "Windows 95 boot disk for WinBook Notebook Computers" into drive A:
  2. Click the Start button,
  3. Select "Run" from the menu
  4. In the "Open" text box type "A:\10.bat" and click OK
  5. A MS-DOS window will be opened and 10.bat will run. When completed you will see the WinBook Utility menu and the Title Bar will say "Finished – 10". Close the window when you see the menu
  6. Right click on the "My Computer" icon
  7. Select "Properties" from the menu
  8. Choose Modem from the list and click the "+" sign next to it
  9. Double-click on Standard 28800 bps Modem
  10. Select the Driver tab
  11. Click the "Update Driver" button
  12. Select "No, select from list" and click Next
  13. Select "Show all hardware"
  14. "WinBook Computer Corp" (NOT WinBook)
  15. Highlight "WinBook FX V.34" under Models and click Finish
  16. Click the Close button to close modem properties
  17. Click Close again to close system properties.

    NOTE: The modem will still be displayed as a Standard 28800 bps modem, however the driver tab will show WinBook FX V.34 with a date of 9-10-96.

Install the Infrared Driver

  1. You will need the Microsoft Infrared Device Driver ver 2.0. It is available from www.microsoft.com or through the WinBook website, www.winbookcorp.com
  2. Click Start, Run and in the Open box type the drive and the name of the file, for example "<drive> w95ir.exe"
  3. Install to the default directory "c:\msir20"
  4. Click Start, Run and in the Open box type "c:\msir20\setup.exe" and press enter.
  5. Follow the on screen instructions.

    NOTES:

  1. Physical port to assign the infrared device to is com3
  2. Install the device using the defaults

Creating Windows 95 Startup Disk

  1. Ensure you have the floppy disk drive in the unit and a 1.44 Mb diskette with a blank label.
  2. Click on the Start button, go to Settings, and click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs Icon, and choose the Startup Disk tab.
  4. Click on the Create Disk button. It will take a moment for the necessary files to be prepared.
  5. Place the disk in the drive and click OK when prompted.
  6. Once the operation has completed remove the disk from the drive and push the right protect tab on the disk up (this will prevent viruses from infecting the disk).

Installing Additional Components

There are a number of additional components not installed by default. These include such things as Microsoft Fax, Games, Multimedia Sound Schemes, and a number of others. The following gives the general procedures for installing or uninstalling additional components.

  1. Click the Start Button, then Settings, then Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  2. Choose the Windows Setup tab. You will now see the listing for the components you may add or remove. Many of these components have additional items.
  3. To add a component you would place a check mark in the box to the left of the components. To remove a component click on it to clear the box.. A gray box with a check mark in it means only some of the available components are selected.
  4. NOTE: If you are not sure what that component is or does look in the Description box below after clicking on the component (not the box) to highlight it.

  5. To access components that are listed below another (eg components listed under Multimedia) Either double click on the component or click the details button.
  6. When you are finished adding or removing components, click the OK button on the Add/Remove Programs box, the necessary software will be copied and if it is necessary to restart Windows, you will be prompted to do so.
