General Information: In order to proceed we will need to determine that this WinBook Tech Article is the proper one for the situation that you are encountering. There are some specific symptoms that we will check in the steps below. Please note that if you have installed the modem and it is working do not proceed with this WinBook Tech Article. If the computer gives you an error that the modem is in use by another program then proceed with the following steps.

  1. Click on the start button, go to settings and go to the control panel.
  2. Open up the system icon.
  3. Click on the Device manager tab.
  4. Click the + next to the modems.
  5. Locate the driver for the Net Surfer modem.
  6. V.34_NET_SURFER_FAX/MODEM.
  7. If the driver appears as above then continue with the next step in the WinBook Tech Article. If it differs from the above line (spaces instead of the underscores). Then there may be another problem with your modem and you should contact WinBook Tech Support.
  8. Highlight the line that says V.34_NET_SURFER_FAX/MODEM, then click on the remove button.
  9. Click ok to confirm the removal of the device. Then close the device manger screen.
  10. Click on the start button, go to run, type in c:\windows\inf and press enter.
  11. Locate the file named SNEWAF1D.INF. Single click on it once to highlight it. Then press the delete key on your keyboard. Close the inf folder by clicking on the x in the top right hand corner.
  12. Click on the start button, go to shutdown, and click on shutdown the computer. Then click ok.
  13. Insert your Net surfer card into the PCMCIA slot. Then repower your computer.
  14. When Windows loads it will tell you that it has found new hardware. Insert the New Media Net Surfer driver diskette in your floppy drive now.
  15. Click on the next button. Windows then should find the V.34 NET SURFER FAX MODEM.
  16. You now end the installation procedure by clicking the finish button.
