There are two ways that drives get letters on a Laptop. The first kind are the ones controlled by your BIOS. These usually include your floppy drive and most hard drives, for which drive letters are first determined when the system is first turned on. The second kind of drives are controlled by software, or more specifically, drivers. These types of drives include CD-ROMs, SyQuests, and other removable drives, network drives, and sometimes SCSI hard disks with identifiers other than zero (0) and one (1). Generally, drive letters are assigned to these drives in the order in which they load. Windows 95 only allows you to change the drive letters for those drives controlled by software. Below are some simple instructions to change your drive letters.

  1. Click on start, go to settings, go to Control Panel.
  2. Click on the System icon and go to the Device Manager tab.
  3. Find the device (CD-ROM or otherwise) that you wish to configure and click on the plus (+) next to it.
  4. Highlight the device and click on the properties button.
  5. Go to the settings tab.
  6. In the section entitled Reserved drive letter; choose the same letter for both the start letter and the end letter.
  7. If the removable option is not checked, and the reserved drive letters listboxes are disabled, check the removable option now.
  8. If the removable drive option was unchecked before you started this procedure then remember to uncheck it after you are finished.
  9. You will then need to restart your laptop for the changes to take effect.
