If your computer is behaving abnormally and there is no reasonable explanation for the behavior such as increasing software failures or file corruption, there is a good possibility you have a virus.

The following is one way of determining if there is a virus on your system:

  1. Click on the "Start" button.
  2. Select "Settings" from the menu
  3. Select "Control Panel"
  4. Double-click on the system icon
  5. Click on the "Performance" tab
  6. Several things to look for here:
    • Is there anything in the list of things here showing "MS-DOS compatibility mode" next to it?
    • Is there a message about "MS-DOS compatibility mode paging" in the message box below?
    • Is there a message about the Master boot record being modified?
  1. If the answer to all three of these are yes then you may have a virus. (90% probable)

Another way to determine if a virus is on the system is as follows:

  1. Click on start, then click on shutdown. Highlight the "Restart the computer into MS-DOS mode" option and then click on the OK button.
  2. At the C:\WINDOWS\> prompt type "CHKDSK" and press the Enter key.
  3. Look at the line that says "total bytes memory"
  4. If this line says 653312 instead of 655360 then you very likely have a virus.

If you have any of the above symptoms, it is suggested that you install a virus scanner software package. Make sure that you also get the most up to date virus definitions for that Anti-Virus program. If you have scanned for viruses using the most current virus definitions and the Anti-Virus program didn't find any viruses, please contact WinBook Technical Support at 1-800-468-1225 and a representative will be able to assist you further.
