NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

General Information: This tech note will show you how to make an emergency recovery of configuration and system files using the program eru.exe. This program will allow you to restore the system setup files in event that it should become corrupted. System setup files include System.dat, User.dat, System.ini, Win.ini, Protocol.ini, Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, IO.sys, Command.com, and MSDOS.sys. This does not backup Windows 95, installed programs, or missing documents. Note that this will only work computers that shipped with a CD-ROM version of Windows 95. In order to proceed you will need the following equipment, a blank floppy disk, and your Windows 95 CD-ROM.

  1. If you have a model that has the modular CD-ROM and floppy drives (FX, LM and XP5PRO) then shutdown the computer and insert your CD-ROM drive now, then restart the computer. If not, or if the CD drive is already in then skip to the next step.
  2. Insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM into the drive.
  3. Click on the start button go to programs and choose msdos prompt.
  4. Type in cd.. and press enter. Then type md c:\eru and press enter.
  5. Type in copy d:\other\misc\eru c:\eru and press enter.
  6. When it is done copying the files type in exit and press enter.
  7. Click on the start button, go to run.
  8. Type in c:\eru\eru and press enter. Then click on next.
  9. Choose other directory then click next. Then click ok.
  10. It will then show you all the files that it will back up. Click on the next button.
  11. When it is done copying the files click on the ok button.
  12. In order to recover, boot the machine directly to a DOS prompt. Do this by pressing the f8 key as soon as you see starting Windows 95 upon startup. Then choose Safe mode command prompt only, and press enter.
  13. At the command prompt type in cd erd and press enter.
  14. Type in erd and press enter. Press y to recover. When Windows is done copying files restart the computer.
