GENERAL INFORMATION: This WinBook Tech Article is intended for only WinBook XL computers with the 12.1" screen and Win98. The symptoms of the problem are as follows. You changed the color setting in the display properties to 16 colors. Once the computer restarted the screen went blank. If you restart the computer you can see the display until Win98 loads then it goes blank again.

  1. Hold down the power button for 3 seconds to turn the computer off.
  2. Turn the computer back on and begin to tap the F8 key once a second until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you get a keyboard error press the F1 key to continue and begin tapping F8 again until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you do not get the Windows 98 Startup menu before the screen goes blank then restart from step 1.
  3. From the Windows 98 Startup menu press the 3 key to highlight Safe Mode. Then type enter to select it.
  4. If Microsoft scandisk runs then let it complete.
  5. Once loaded Windows will give a message confirming that it is running in Safe Mode. Click OK to confirm this message.
  6. Click on the Start Button and choose Run.
  7. Type in msconfig.exe and click on OK.
  8. In the General Tab, under Startup Selection choose the Diagnostic Startup mode. Then click on OK.
  9. Windows will prompt you to restart your computer, click on Yes to restart.
  10. Windows will load to the Windows 98 Startup menu, press the 1 key to highlight Normal Mode, then hit enter to select it.
  11. Windows will take a little longer than normal to load since we are coming out of Safe Mode.
  12. Once you are back in Windows click on the Start Button and choose Run.
  13. Type in msconfig.exe and click on OK.
  14. Change the Startup Selection back to Normal Startup. Then click on OK.
  15. Do not restart your computer this time! Click on NO to restart later.
  16. Click on the Start Button, choose Settings and then Control Panel.
  17. In Control Panel double click on the Display icon to bring up the Display Properties.
  18. Click on the Settings tab.
  19. Locate the colors setting, click on the box with down arrow next to it and choose high color 16bit.
  20. Locate the Screen area setting. Click and hold the slide bar and move it right until it reads 800x600.
  21. Click on the OK button.
  22. Windows will prompt you to restart to make the changes. Click on Yes to restart.
