The Standby option is missing from the Shutdown dialogue box and Standby is not an option in Power Management in the Control Panel. The Fn F4 keys do not work and the unit does not suspend when in Windows 98.

  1. Click the Start button and go up to Settings and click on Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click on System and then choose the second tab, Device Manager.
  3. Click the "+" next to Disk Drives.
  4. Click on the GENERIC NEC FLOPPY DISK and click Remove.
  5. Click OK on the Confirm Device Removal box.
  6. Click the "+" next to System Devices.
  7. Click on Advance Power Management support and click Remove.
  8. Click OK on the Confirm Device Removal box.
  9. Click No to the message "Do you want to restart your computer now?"
  10. Click the "+" next System Devices.
  11. Click on Intel 82371AB Power Management Controller and click Remove.
  12. Click OK on the Confirm Device Removal box.
  13. Click on the Close button to close the Device Manager.
  14. Click the Start button and then click Shutdown.
  15. In the Shutdown dialogue box choose Restart and then click OK, and the computer will restart.
  16. You will see the Intel 82371AB Advanced Power Management controller found and installed when Windows starts. The floppy disk drive is found and installed without a message.
  17. Control Panel should open automatically. If it does not click on the Start button go to Settings and then click on Control Panel.
  18. Double-click on the Add New Hardware icon.
  19. Click Next on the first dialogue box.
  20. Click Next again, and Windows will search for any new Plug and Play devices.
  21. In the following dialogue box, ensure that "Yes (Recommended) is selected and click the Next button.
  22. Click Next to begin the search and you will see the indicator progress as Windows searches.
  23. When the search has completed click Details and you will see that Windows has found the Advanced Power Management support. Click the Finish button.
  24. Windows will copy files and you will see a Composite Power Source and an APM Battery Slot are found and installed.
  25. The options for Standby are restored to the Shutdown dialogue box and Power Management in the Control Panel.
