  1. Turn the computer on and let windows startup normally
  2. Double click on the small speaker icon on the taskbar near the time
  3. Left click on options on the dialog menu
  4. Left click on properties
  5. Verify that playback is selected
  6. In the "show following volume controls" window verify that the phone line option is checked
  7. Click on the ok button
  8. In the "volume properties" windows you should see a phone line column
  9. At the bottom of the phone line column, put a check in the box that says select
  10. Close the volume properties dialog by clicking on the x in the top right corner
  11. You should be able to hear your modem dial now

Note: Some newer versions of the LT Winmodem driver used in the XL series computer will not give a "Phone Line" option. If you do not have this option, look for a "Line Out" or "Mono Out" option. Modem drivers after version 5.22 may not allow dialing sounds. This is a function of the driver provided by Lucent, and at the present time cannot be corrected.
