WinBook does not support Windows 98 on the WinBook XP5. Any Questions regarding Windows 98 should be referred to Microsoft. This FAQ reflects a full Windows 98 installation on a newly formatted 810 MB hard drive. All settings chosen during the Windows 98 installation should be left to Default. There were no external peripherals or PCMCIA card attached during the Windows 98 installation procedure. Q. Will Windows 98 work on the WinBook XP5? A. Yes. However Windows 98 may not work properly due to conflict between Windows 98, which is a Plug and Play operating system, and the WinBook XP5, which is not a Plug and Play computer. Q. Can I install either the Windows 98 upgrade or full version? A. Yes. These can be purchased from and supported by Microsoft. Q. Will the Power Management work on the WinBook XP5? A. No. Power Management functions will not work correctly on the WinBook XP5. Some BIOS Power Management functions may work, however Windows 98 Power Management will be unable to control Power Management functions. Q. Will the suspend or standby features work on my laptop after installing Windows 98? A. No. These Windows 98 features will not work correctly on the WinBook XP5 since the BIOS is not Plug and Play and therefore non-compliant with the Windows 98 Plug and Play operating system. Q. How much Ram or Memory do I need to use Windows 98 on the WinBook XP5? A. 16 MB will work but we suggest 32 MB. Q. How much hard drive space is should I use for installing and operating Windows 98 on the WinBook XP5? A. We suggest you use at least a 1gigabyte hard drive if you plan to install and use applications in Windows 98. Q. How long does it take to install Windows 98 on the WinBook XP5? A. It will take about 50 minutes, once the process begins, to install Windows 98. Q. Will Windows automatically detect all of my hardware native to the WinBook XP5? A. No. The internal modem will not be recognized. To install the modem run Add New Hardware in the Control Panel and then reboot the unit to take effect. Q. How do I install Windows 98 on my WinBook XP5 since it does not have an internal CD-ROM? A. An External CD-ROM or a WinBook Docking station with a CD-ROM is necessary for the Windows 98 CD installation. You may contact Microsoft to see if they have a diskette version of Window 98 available. Q. I installed Windows 98 on the WinBook XP5 and now my PCMCIA card is not recognized even though PCMCIA support is enabled in the Control Panel? A. Obtain the XP5-VXD from http://www.winbookcorp.com and install it according to the accompanying instructions. |
