One of the new utilities for Windows 98 is called Disk Cleanup Manager. It can be launched by typing Cleanmgr from Start, Run, or going to Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, Disk Cleanup. It can also be setup to be ran automatically by using Schedule Task manager. Disk Cleanup utility can automatically delete files no longer needed on your computer. When launching Disk Cleanup Manager you are given the option as to which drive you wish to clean up. After selecting the drive, Disk Cleanup Manager calculates the potential free space and then will display a box asking which directories you would like to have cleaned. You can select which directory or directories you want to clean. Then selecting it to cleanup will delete all the un-needed files in those directories. The different tabs in Disk Cleanup are described below. Disk Cleanup Tab The options available are based on the content of the drive. The Disk Cleanup tab allows you to remove the following file types: Temporary Internet Files - Files stored in the Temporary Internet Files directory, except cookies. Recycle Bin - Files stored in the Recycled Bin. Delete Windows 98 uninstall information - Winundo.dat and Winundo.ini. which are on the C: root directory. Windows Setup temporary files - In case you have ran Windows setup more than once. Temporary Internet Controls -ActiveX or Java control applets stored in Downloaded Program Files directory. Temporary Files - Files stored in the Tempdir folder that have not been used in the last seven days.
More Options Tab You can remove components installed by Windows 98. From the More Options tab, clicking the Clean up button under Windows setup launches the Add/Remove applet from Control Panel with the Windows Setup tab in focus. You can also uninstall programs installed on the machine. Clicking the Clean up button under Installed programs launches the Add/Remove applet from Control Panel with the Install/Uninstall tab in focus. If you have not converted the drive to FAT32 yet, and your drive is large enough, you can convert it here. Otherwise it is grayed out and disabled. Settings Tab The settings tab specifies whether to run Disk Cleanup automatically whenever this drive runs low on disk space. This option is not available for removable drives. |
