To check information about what settings your TCP/IP network is using, you can use a little-known utility called WinIPConfig to see information about your TCP/IP network settings. From the Start Menu, press Run, type WINIPCFG, and click OK.

The first screen that comes up displays the Adapter Address, the I.P. Address, the Subnet Mask, and the Default gateway. There will also be six buttons at the bottom of the screen OK, Release, Renew, Release All, Renew All and More Info>>. Hitting Release All and Renew All may not show any difference in addresses. These numbers are set when the PPP dialup is on-line. Going to the More Info>> button will display more information about your PPP SLIP connection. (Note: If you are on a network when using Winipcfg, you will see network settings instead of PPP settings.)

In the MoreInfo>> display you will see a more detailed version of the first display box. It will display; Host name, which is the name you sign on your server with; the DNS server, which is the IP Address you have dialed into; Node type which is how it is connected. Normally on a PPP connection it will say broadcast. NetBios Scope ID, which is used when on a network, an I.P Routing checkbox if it has been routed through another I.P connection, NetBIOS Resolution uses DNS, which is also used for a network and if it is using DNS. The second half of the box displays the adapter information for your connection. This may vary depending on if you are using a PPP connection or an ETHERNET connection.

Below that it will display the Adapter address, the IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DHCP Server, Primary WINS Server, Secondary WINS Server, Lease Obtained, Lease Expires display boxes. These information boxes cannot be changed. It is only information that is needed by some internet providers, for setting up some types of TCP/IP DIALUP adapters. The buttons across the bottom from left to right are " Ok, Release, Renew, Release All, and Renew All. "

Hitting the Ok button will close the More Info box. Pressing the Release button will release all the numbers. Hitting the Renew button will retrieve the IP address numbers back into the More Info box. Hitting Release all and Renew All will also do the same thing. It will release and retrieve the information from the PPP or the Network adapter.
