Q. What is the difference between Standby and Suspend modes?
A. When you cause your computer to go into standby mode, it will cause the unit to go into a low power state. This causes the hard drive to spin down, and the display to blank out. It will stay in this mode until the mouse is moved, or the space bar is tapped. This will cause unit to come out of standby speed the hard disk back up and the display to re-appear. When a unit is put in to suspend mode, the unit will write to either DRAM or the hard disk. When set to write to DRAM, will shut power off to everything except the DRAM memory for a set period of time that is set in BIOS setup. If the battery power is lost while set to DRAM, everything that was in memory will be lost.
When set to disk, the unit will write to the hard disk the complete system state and power off everything. To bring back out of suspend, press the power button and unit will power back up and display a message "Resuming from disk". It will then go back in to Windows where it was left when it had first suspended. This is a safer mode to use because the loss of battery power will not cause data loss.
There is a third setting for suspend and standby modes. This is the auto setting. Setting to auto will cause the unit to first go in to standby mode, and then after it has spent the amount of time set in BIOS setup. It will then go in to a suspend state and power off. Q. What is "CPU Auto Doze"? A. When CPU Auto Doze is enabled, this allows the unit to allow CPU power reduction when system is idle. Q. What is "Suspend on low battery"? A. When the unit is enabled to suspend on low battery, the unit will watch battery power. When it detects that the battery has only a short time left, it will give a warning that the user should plug the unit into AC power or save the work you are doing to avoid data loss and shut down. This must be disabled to test battery life. Q. What is "Display timeout"? A. When set, if no display activity occurs in the time period set. The BIOS will put the display into a low power mode. This setting is very useful for when having unit on battery power for any extended time. Q. What is the "Modem ring" setting? A. This setting is used in conjunction with fax programs, or other programs that need the phone to be answered by the unit. When set, the unit will come back out of a standby set and allow for the phone to be answered by a program. Q. What is "Standby timeout"? A. Standby timeout is the amount of time that the unit will be idle before going into a standby mode. Q. What is "Suspend timeout"? A. This is the amount of time the unit will be idle before going into a suspend state and powering off. Q. What is "Hard disk timeout"? A. Hard disk timeout is the amount of time set for the unit to be idle before putting the hard disk into a low power mode. Q. What is the "Low battery warning"? A. When enabled the "Low battery warning" will allow the unit to beep and display a low battery warning when the battery gets into a low charge state. Q. What is the "Battery calibration" setting for? A. This setting is used for performing battery calibration. This setting when enabled will take the unit to a screen that will display amount of battery life left as a percentage. The flashing percentage bar and the screen will discharge the battery completely to remove all battery memory that the battery may have. After the battery has been completely discharged, it can then be fully charged and allow for longer battery life. This should initially be done three times when first purchased and then once every thirty one times the unit has been plugged into the AC power. The battery must first be fully charged before this setting should be used. See the instructions in the owners manual for complete instructions on battery calibration and long battery life. |
