This WinBook Tech Article requires that you disable the internal modem. This is because the internal modem uses COM2.

  1. Turn your computer on.
  2. Press the DEL key when you see the message, "Press DEL to enter Setup".
  3. In the CMOS Setup, use the down arrow key to highlight Peripheral Setup.
  4. Change COM2 (Modem Port) to Disabled. To do this, press the PgDn key until it says Disabled to the right of COM2 (Modem Port).
  5. Press the ESC key, then press F10 to save changes and exit. Then press Enter.
  6. Your computer will reboot. Once Windows has finished loading, insert your PCMCIA modem into the PCMCIA slot.
  7. Windows will find new hardware. It may require a driver disk provided with the modem. At this point, follow the instructions that were provided with the modem to properly install it. If you have trouble installing your modem, please contact the manufacturer of the modem.
  8. Once the modem has been installed it should now be using COM2. To verify this, click Start then click Settings, next click Control Panel. In the Control Panel double click the Modems icon. In the Modems Properties window, click the Diagnostics tab at the top of the window. It should show your modem next to COM2.
