Subject: WinBook XL will not shut down with network card inserted

Symptoms:

You are attempting to shut down the WinBook XL, with a PCMCIA network card in the unit. The "Please wait while your computer shuts down" screen is displayed but the computer does not shut down. If you remove the network card the WinBook XL will shut down normally. You have Internet Explorer 4.01 installed and have the Desktop Update installed. You may be using the Novell NetWare Client, version 4.10, or the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks. You may be also be using the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks with mapped drives.

Resolution:

  1. Remove the Internet Explorer Windows Desktop Update.
    1. Click the Start button, go to Settings and then click on Control Panel.
    2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
    3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click on Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and then click the Add/Remove button.
    4. Click on the option "Remove the Windows Desktop Update component…"
    5. Click the OK button.
    6. Click the OK button at the prompt "Setup must close all programs to reconfigure your system.
  1. If you are using the Novell NetWare Client version 4.10 you should contact Novell for an updated version of VNETWARE.386.
  2. Delete your network drive mappings.
    1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
    2. Right-click one of the network drives, and then click Disconnect.
    3. Repeat steps a-b for each network drive.
