There will be some incidences where the video driver may be corrupt and will not allow the unit to go to the normal Windows desktop. Booting up only allows the unit to boot to Safe-Mode. You will find that booting into Safe-Mode will not allow you to change Display settings. To get around this problem, go to the Start button, and then to the Run command. Type MSINFO32. This will run the Microsoft System Information program. Go to the Tools Menu at the top and select the System Configuration Utility. Select the Advanced button in the Lower right hand area, and put a check mark in the VGA 640X480X16 box. Then reboot the system. It should allow the unit to boot in to Windows properly in a 640X480 mode at 16 colors. The display will not look like you are used to, but it will allow it to boot in to Windows, so that you can change the Display settings. Once display settings have been set to proper size, Video Adapter, and monitor. Again go to the Start button and use the RUN command again. Run MSINFO32 again. Select the Tools Menu at the top of the box, then the System Configuration Utility, select the Advanced button, and un-check the VGA640X480X16 box. And then close MSINFO32. Reboot the system. It should now boot in to Windows, and have the proper display settings. This procedure can be used when it is not convenient to run SCANREG or remove the display drivers. It cuts down on diagnosis time and allows you to only have to reboot once. |
