If the user needs to add or remove a Windows program and he goes to the Control panel and then to the Add/Remove programs Icon and then to the Windows setup tab. He finds that the white box that lists all the programs he can remove are missing and the white box is blank. There are several reasons that this may occur. The first is that the Windows/INF directory has been renamed, moved, or deleted from the drive. In the case that the INF directory has been renamed and the file name is not known. Go to the Start button and use the find program, search on the c: drive and include subdirectories. Use the named file *.inf. This will search for all files with the INF extension. If the Directory had just been renamed or moved, all of the INF files will be under a single directory. Using Windows explorer, rename the directory in question.
If the files have been deleted or corrupt, the files will need to be restored. To do this, first make a new subfolder in the Windows directory called Inf. Then go to the Start button and then to programs, then to Ms-DOS prompt. When you get to the prompt, insert your Windows 95 CD. Switch to the D: drive and then to the Win95 directory. At this prompt type: EXTRACT /L C:\WINDOWS\INF PRECOPY2.CAB *.INF This will get all of the INF files from the Windows CD and copy them to the C:\Windows\Inf directory. At this point, type exit to get out of the MS-DOS prompt and then shut down Windows and restart. At this time the INF files will be able to be accessed and the user can then add or remove Windows programs as needed. |
