There are currently six types of CD Rom Discs being made. Not all CDs are playable or useable in all computers. The 6 basic types are as listed.

  1. CD-ROM disc contains data only. Most software install CDs are of this type.
  2. CD AUDIO disc contains only digital audio information.
  3. VIDEO CD disc may include video clips, converted from MPEG files, and still images, converted from BMP,JPEG,PCX,TIFF or TGA. The video clips must conform to the MPEG for Video CD specification as defined in the White Book.
  4. MIXED MODE disc contains both data and digital audio. Data is recorded in the first track, while audio is on tracks 2 to 99 of the same disc.
  5. CD EXTRA also known as CD Plus or Enhanced CD, includes two sessions where the first session contains up to 98 audio tracks and the second session contains a data track written in the CD-ROM XA format.
  6. CD-RW rewriteable CD discs. These discs can be erased and rewritten upto 1000 times.

The WinBook XL does have a multi-read CD-ROM Drive. All other WinBooks have standard CD-ROM Drives. Most software and audio discs should be fully compatible in any WinBook. But some of the newer MIXED MODE and CD EXTRA discs may be unusable in your older Generation WinBook Model
