What's Internet Explorer 4.0?

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 is a new Web browser. It also provides you new integrated features as viewing the folders on your computer the same way you browse the Web, read e-mail with Outlook Express, use a Web page as a background in a folder, and read Web content when you’re not connected to the Web.

NOTE: This is the full installation of Internet Explorer 4.0. This means that Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 4.0 is a combined to give more functionality and new features to the operating system. You do not re-install over top Windows 95, this will cause serious problems with the operating system that may lead to loss of data.

Is this the final version of Internet Explorer 4.0?

Yes, it is the final version of Internet Explorer 4.0. There will be component updates available on the Internet. Open the Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs, highlight Internet Explorer 4.0 and click on the Add/Remove button. Choose option #2, "Add a new component", and click on the OK button. This option will connect to the Internet and go to the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Component Download page. This page will determine what components are already install, upgrades available and new components that can be downloaded.

What programs are pre-installed on my computer?

Pre-installed with Windows 95 is Internet Explorer 4.0, Outlook Express, Microsoft NetMeeting, Chat, and FrontPage Express. These are either found on your desktop or in Start Menu/Programs/Internet Explorer Folder.

How can I uninstall any of these components or all of Internet Explorer?

Open the Control Panel and then double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Highlight the component that you want to uninstall and click on the Add/Remove button. Click on "Yes" if you really want to remove the component.

To uninstall all of Internet Explorer 4.0, highlight Internet Explorer 4.0 on the list and click on the Add/Remove button. "Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 and all its components" is checked, then click the Ok button. NOTE: In the Advance option, you can check all the components you want to remove, but do not check on "Delete the backup information for Internet Explorer 4.0." You will not be able to uninstall Internet Explorer.

If you want to keep just the Internet Explorer 4.0 web browser and not any of the other operating system update, then highlight Internet Explorer 4.0 on the list and click on the Add/Remove button, then check the third option that will keep the web browser.

What is the Active Desktop?

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 includes the Active Desktop™ interface. Active Desktop expands how you can customize and work from your desktop. With Internet Explorer 4.0, you can use JPEG and GIF files-as well as the usual bitmap files-to create wallpapers whenever your desktop is set up in the Web View mode. To do so:

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Active Desktop.
  2. Choose View As Web Page.
  3. Right-click again and choose Properties.
  4. Choose Browse from the menu, and select any folder on your hard drive that contains a JPEG or GIF image. That file will become the wallpaper for your Web View mode.

  5. How do I get Icons to the Quick Launch taskbar?
    An easy way to start frequently used programs, you can put a shortcut to a program in the Quick Launch portion of your taskbar.
  6. Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, click Toolbars, and then make sure that Quick Launch is checked.
  7. From My Computer or Windows Explorer, drag a program file (a file with an .exe extension) onto the Quick Launch portion of the taskbar.
  8. The icon for that program is now next to the other Quick Launch icons on the taskbar.

    How do I setup a web page as my desktop wallpaper?

    To set a Web page as your desktop wallpaper, follow these steps:

  9. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
  10. On the Background tab, click Browse.
  11. In the Files Of Type box, click Background Files.
  12. Click the .htm file you want to use as the background, and then click Open.
  13. Click OK.
  14. What are Subscriptions?

    With Internet Explorer 4.0, you can subscribe to any page on the Web. When you subscribe to a page, Internet Explorer monitors the page, notifies you when the page is updated, and optionally delivers the updated content at your convenience.

    Subscribing to a Site

    To subscribe to a Website, use one of the following methods:

    Add to Favorites and Subscribe:

  15. Open the Website in Internet Explorer.
  16. On the Favorites menu, click Add To Favorites.
  17. Click "Yes, but only tell me when this page is updated", or "Yes, notify me of updates and download the page for offline viewing", and then click OK.
  18. In the Subscribe dialog box, click OK.

Configuring a Subscription

For a New Subscription:

You can customize the options for a subscription when you subscribe to a site. When you are subscribing, click Customize in the Add Favorite dialog box to customize the notification and download options.

For Existing Subscriptions:

  1. On the Favorites menu, click Manage Subscriptions.
  2. Right-click the subscription you want to modify, and then click Properties.
  3. Select the options you want to use, and then click OK.

Subscription Options

When you subscribe to a Website, click "Yes, notify me of updates and download the page for offline viewing", and then click Customize in the Add Favorite dialog box, when prompted "How should the subscription be updated" in the Subscription Wizard you can choose from the following download options:

  • Scheduled: Causes subscription updates to occur daily at 12:00 A.M. if you connect to the Internet using a local area network. If you connect to the Internet using a modem, you must manually update your subscriptions. To do so, see the description of the "Manually" option below.
  • Custom Schedule: You can specify when subscriptions will be updated. If you connect to the Internet using a local area network, subscription updates occur automatically based on the schedule you specify. If you connect to the Internet using a modem, subscriptions can be updated in any of the following ways:
        • You are connected to the Internet when your subscriptions are automatically updated.
        • You manually update your subscriptions. To do so, see the description of the "Manually" option below.
        • You must enable unattended dial-up for subscription updates. To do so, click the "Connect automatically to update subscriptions" check box to select it. Note that you must have an active Dial-Up Networking connection with the automatic dialing option enabled for unattended dial-up to work. To enable the automatic dialing option in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
    1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the View menu, and then click the Connection tab.
    2. Click on Settings button.
    3. Choose your Dial-up Networking connection and then click the "Connect automatically to update subscriptions" check box to select it.
    4. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  • Manually: Subscriptions are updated only when you manually update them. To manually update your subscriptions, on the Favorites menu, click Update All Subscriptions. If you do not want to update all of your subscriptions, click Manage Subscriptions, right-click the subscription you want to update, and then click Update Now.

How do I get my WinBook logo wallpaper back?

To restore the WinBook logo desktop wallpaper, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
  2. On the Background tab, click Browse.
  3. In the Files Of Type box, click Background Files.
  4. Click the WinBook.htm file in the Drivers\Web folder, and then click Open.
  5. Click OK.

NOTE: The Drivers folder is hidden, so you will need to click on Start Menu/Settings/Folder & Icons. Click on the View tab, and check Show all files, and click on OK.

Outlook Express

Use Outlook Express, the Internet Explorer mail and news program, to exchange e-mail messages and read and post messages to Internet newsgroups. You can preview your messages without opening them and easily switch between your mail folders, news servers, and newsgroups. You can download newsgroups for offline reading, so you don't have to be connected to the Internet to read messages.

Microsoft NetMeeting

Hold conferences over the Web or a local area network with NetMeeting. You can place calls to anyone on a network or with a modem, talk to someone (even use video!) over the Internet, and work in a shared application with people at other locations.

Chat

Chat with others in a chat room, in graphical comic-strip format or standard text format, using Microsoft Chat. You can choose which character you want to use to portray yourself, chat with one or several people, whisper confidentially to individual participants, and save or print the entire chat session.

FrontPage Express

Use FrontPage Express to create and publish Web pages. FrontPage Express includes templates that make it easy to create the Web page you want. Plus, it's compatible with Microsoft FrontPage.
