What are the correct settings for my modem in the BIOS and how do I check it? For the XL: Tap the DEL key immediately upon booting your computer. This should take you into your systems BIOS setup. In the BIOS use your down arrow key to highlight Peripheral Setup and then press Enter. The first line should say Com2 Modem port, you will want to make sure this is set to 2f8h. If it not set to 2f8h, then use the Page Up key until it does say 2f8h. Once it is set to 2f8h press your ESC key, then F10 and then Enter to save and exit. For the XLi Tap the F2 key immediately upon booting your computer. This should take you into your system's BIOS setup. In the BIOS, use your right arrow key to move to the Advanced menu. Use the down arrow key to highlight Peripheral Configuration and then press Enter. The first line should say Com2 Modem, you will want to make sure this is set toEnabled and the I/O range is set to 2f8h. Also verify that the DMA settings are set to 05 and 06. If your BIOS configuration does not match those listed above, change the settings by using the + or - keys. Once it is set to Enabled, the I/O is set to 2f8h and the DMAs are 05 and 06, press your ESC key, then F10 and then Enter to save and exit. For the XL2: Tap the DEL key immediately upon booting your computer. What should my resources be set to in the Windows Device Manager? The resources for your modem in device manager should be: Input/Output Range: 02f8 - 02ff Interrupt Request: 03 Input/Output Range: 0260-0267 Direct Memory Access: 05 Direct Memory Access: 06 If these resources are different on your system, double click each resource, and then use the up and down arrows to change them. Should I be using the V.90 driver for my modem? The latest driver for the LT WinModem is the V.90 driver. This driver is available on our website if you do not already have it installed on your computer. Be aware, however, that some Internet Service Providers and Online Services have not yet upgraded their hardware to the V.90 standard. Call your ISP, or Online Service to find out if they have upgraded their hardware. Using the V.90 standard with a non-V.90 provider may cause performance decreases. How do I know if I have the latest driver? To determine which driver you have, click on Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. In Control Panel, double click on Modem. Click on the tab that says Diagnostics, click on Com2 and then on the button that says More Info. If you have the V.90 driver installed the ATI3 under Command and Response will say: LT V.90 Data+fax+Voice+VoiceView+Dsvd Modem Version 5.04 (or higher) If you have the latest K56flex driver installed the ATI3 line will read: LT KData+fax+Voice+VoiceView+Dsvd Modem Version 4.15 (or higher), and the ATI5 line will read 4.15,0,19 (or higher) I'm using a program that was not able to identify my modem on it's own. Which driver should I select from their list of drivers? The modem you are using is the LT WinModem by Lucent Technologies. It uses a Rockwell 56K chipset. If that driver is not listed then try using generic 56k or Hayes compatible (error correcting) modem. Also, you might try using a generic WinModem. Your software vendor may have an update for their software that includes drivers for 56K WinModem. Please contact your software vendor to find out if they have such an update. Im using a DOS or Windows 3.x based program, will my modem work in this software? The modem you have is a Windows 95/98 based modem and will not work correctly in Windows 3.x or DOS. Will my modem work in other operating systems? Your modem will work in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. The driver that shipped with your computer will work in both Windows 95 and 98. The driver is located on your hard drive in C:\DRIVERS\MODEM (as your drive was shipped). You can run the Setup program if you need to reinstall the drivers. WinBook does not support the Windows NT operating system, however the Windows NT modem driver is provided for your convience located under the Drivers link of the WinBook Technical Support website. My modem connects slower than 56,000 BPS. There are several things to take in to consideration when trying to connect at rates higher than 28.8 or 33.6. V.90 Modems will not always connect to a K56 Flex line at high speeds. If you are dialing into an X2 line or 33.6 line you will not be able to connect at higher rates. X2 is a different standard, and is not supported by the LT WinModem with the K56 Flex driver installed. If you are using an X2 line, you must use the V.90 driver. The V.90 driver is compatible with both X2 and V.90 lines. After you have verified with your provider that you are connecting to a 56K connection (V.90 or K56Flex) make sure that your phone line is connected directly from the wall outlet to your notebook. Using a splitter type device or plugging into other devices first can create line noise or interference and decrease your connection speeds. Make sure the line does not pass near any high power devices such as a television or microwave. A very quiet, stable connection must be present to achieve 56K speeds. If you have access to another K56flex or V.90 modem try testing it on your phone lines to verify that your phone lines can handle 56k speeds. You may want to call your telephone company to see if they can perform a line test to verify the condition of your line. Finally, an FCC regulation currently requires 56K modems to have a speed limit of 53K. Currently no 56K modem can operate at 56K speed. Is this modem user installable or user upgradable? The modem can only be to be installed or repaired by a WinBook service technician. As newer drivers become available WinBook will post those drivers on our website for our customers to upgrade to. Is this modem voice capable? Yes, the modem is voice capable. However, neither Windows 95 nor Windows 98 come with any software that allows you to use this feature. If you would like to use your modem as a speakerphone or answering machine there are many third party software packages available that will allow you to take advantage of this. Consult your local software store for more information on these products. |
