Subject: How to run System Restore from Windows ME Startup Disk

Note: Windows ME does not have a option to format a floppy disk with System files. In order to create a bootable floppy for a Windows ME unit WinBook Tech Article TNSI018 "How to create a start up disk in Windows ME" needs to be followed.

A boot disk is a disk that can be used to start the machine from the floppy drive. It can be usefull for troubleshooting Windows startup problems and hardware failures.

    1. Insert the Windows Me Startup Disk.
    2. Start the computer and immediately tap the F2 fey to enter the BIOS.
    3. When the computer has entered the BIOS Setup Utility use the arrow keys to highlight the heading BOOT.
    4. Using the up and down arrow keys, highlight the hard drive then hit the "-" (hyphen) key next to the zero two times. this should put hard drive at the bottom of the list.
    5. Now hit F10 key once and hit the ENTER key once, the computer will now reboot.
    6. At the Startup menu, choose Minimum Boot then hit the ENTER key once.
    7. At the command prompt, type EDIT c:\windows\system.ini, and then press the ENTER key once.
    8. Use the arrow keys to move to the shell=explorer.exe line and edit it so that it looks like this:
      shell=progman.exe
    9. Press ALT+F, and then press S to save the changes to the System.ini file.
    10. Press ALT+F, and then press X to exit the EDIT program.
    11. Remove your Windows Me Startup disk. Then restart your computer by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del all at once. When your computer restarts, Program Manager should start.
    12. Click on the File menu, choose RUN, type msconfig in the Command Line box, and then press the ENTER key once.
    13. Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer
    14. It will show you the Welcome to System Restore message.  Click on Restore my computer to an earlier time.  Click Next
    15. It will then display a calendar with today's date selected.  On the right you will see a list of restore points that were created today, either manually or automatically.  If you choose a different date, it will then display the list of restore points for that day.  Choose the date and restore point that you want to restore to and Click Next.
    16. It will give you a warning telling you to close or save all programs, and not to alter, open, or delete any files.  Click Ok.
    17. It then explains that the System Restore will not destroy or alter your documents in any way, however you will have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore date.  Click Next.
    18. It will then do the restore procedure automatically and restart your computer.
    19. Upon returning to windows it will give you a confirmation screen stating that the restore was successful.  Click Ok
    20. You have successfully restored the computer!
