What is different about Windows ME? SomeDOSbased programs will still work in Windows ME. However, since
major changes have been made to the internal workings of the operating
system, you will find that a large number ofDOSbased programs will not
work. Microsoft has no plans to include support for these programs in
future versions of Windows. It is recommended that you upgrade yourDOSbased programs to versions that will work under Windows ME. If you are
not sure if your program will work, you should contact the program's vendor
for compatibility information. Most programs designed for Windows 95 and 98 will work with Windows ME.
Some programs may require patches or updates to work correctly. If there
are questions, you should check with your program's vendor for compatibility
information..
Drive Space is an olderDOSprogram designed to compress data on hard
drives and floppy disks so more information could be installed. This program
is not compatible with new large capacity hard drives and modern file
systems. The Drive Space program included in Windows ME is only capable
of reading compressed floppy drives. It will not allow you to compress
any drives. Windows ME comes with the Windows Media Player, which is capable of playing
a large variety of media types including: CD-Audio, digital video and
audio files, and Internet streaming media. Networking computers can be a complex process. The basic procedure would
be to first install your network adapter, then run the Home Networking
Wizard under Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications. Accessibility Options are designed to make Windows more accessible for
people with disabilities. They allow you to modify the display and input
devices to make it easier to work with the computer. Windows does not include any virus protection, this must be purchased
separately. It is recommended that you purchase an anti-virus package
and update it regularly to protect your computer from viruses and other
malicious programs. All power management settings are controlled by Windows. These settings
can be changed in the Power Options control panel. Internet Explorer 5.5 is an integral part of Windows ME and cannot be
removed. If you prefer a different Web Browser, you may install it, and
have it work properly. If you wish to have the other browser as your default
browser, you may set this under the Internet Options control panel. The Certificate of Authenticity is attached to the bottom of the computer.
You should write this number down and keep it with your important documentation.
Two good places to keep this are written on your invoice for the computer,
and on a piece of paper in the envelope with your Restore CD. In accordance with our agreement with Microsoft, we cannot ship Windows
CDs with computers. Your Restore CD has all of the software you need
to reload Windows on your computer. Please do not lose this disk, as it
cannot be replaced. You can check your computer's resources using the System control Panel.
Look under Device Manager, highlight Computer and click properties. You
will have options to view Interrupt Request, Input/Output Range, Direct
Memory Access, and Memory Address resource settings. The WinBook Si and Si2 come with several drivers which allow you to use
the special features of your computer. You can find these in the Drivers
directory on your Restore CD. There is no need to install these when you
get your computer, they come pre-installed. The copy on your Restore CD
is to be used in case you have the need to reinstall these drivers. These
drivers are updated from time to time. You can find updates at www.winbookcorp.com. You can search your computer, other computers on your local network, and the Internet by clicking on the Start button and choosing Search. Why can't I find the Dialup Networking Folder in My Computer? The Dialup Networking Folder has been moved to Control Panels. |
