The purpose of this technical article is to help you install Windows
2000 Professional with an external floppy drive or with Legacy support.
These instructions will be setup for the non-bootable Windows 2000 Professional
with the four (4) floppy installation disks.
You download and burn the following files to a CD: Windows 2000 Chipset,
Video, Audio, Touchpad, Wireless LAN, Modem from www.smlink.com/download/index.htm,
and Windows 2000 LAN.
To install the Windows 2000 Professional, do the following:
NOTE: Make sure your USB Floppy is connected to the
unit before you start.
Starting unit into the BIOS
- Start Computer and tap the F2 key a couple of times
a second as it starts up to enter the Phoenix Bios setup Utility.
- Use the Right or Left Arrow keys and Highlight Advanced
on the menu.
- Use the Down Arrow to Highlight Legacy Support.
If this is Disabled, hold the shift key down and press
the plus (+) key.
- Press the ESC key.
- Insert Windows 2000 Startup Disk 1 of 4 into the
Floppy Drive.
- Press the F10 key. Do you want to save configuration
and Exit? Yes should be highlighted or selected.
Press Enter.
Installing Windows 2000 Professional with the four Startup Disks
- Each disk will tell you when to insert the next one.
- Insert the Windows 2000 Professional CD. The Windows 2000 Setup screen
will appear.
- Select Install Windows 2000 and press Next.
- Press F8 to Accept License Agreement.
- To Install Windows 2000 Press Enter.
- You may have 3 different partitions to choose from. The first partition
is usually for restoring your computer back to factory setting with
or without formatting the drive. The second is the primary partition
and will be either FAT32 or NTFS format. The third is a un-partition
area of the hard drive.
- Select the FAT32/NTFS partition by highlighting
it. Use the arrow key to highlight the largest partition and Press Enter.
- It will ask which partition to Format. Select the largest
partition and Press Enter.
- Windows will format the partition and install Windows 2000 Professional.
- Remove the last disk from the floppy drive before the computer restarts
and leave the Windows 2000 Professional CD installed.
- Once your computer restarts, a Wizard will start. Press Next.
- Regional Settings: Set your region, Click Next.
- Personal Setting: Enter your Name and Company. (Optional),
then Click Next.
- Enter Product Code Key, Click Next.
- Enter Computer Name and Password. (Optional)
NOTE: The Wizard does give you a default Computer Name,
Changing it is optional. If you want an Administrator password, do it
at this time, and then Confirm the password.
- Click Next.
- Time Settings: Set your Time, Time Zone and Date,
then Click Next.
- Network Setting: Typical Settings is the default but you have the
option to use the Customize Settings. Click Next.
- Select Workgroup or Computer Domain, Click Next.
- Click Finish. The computer will restart.
- Network Wizard will start on the restart, Click Next.
- Users of the Computer window opens: Select the default name or put
your user name and password, then Click Next.
- Click Finish. Windows 2000 Professional is now installed.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Intel Chipset MUST be the
first driver to be Installed.
NOTE: Because the drivers are so large one should download
from another computer and burn to a CD.
Installing the Intel Chipset for the WIFI Winbook J4’s
- Click Start, then Run.
- In the Open box type: D:\, then Click the Browse
button.
- Select J4_2000_Chipset.exe, Click Open.
- In the Open box you should have the following: D:\J4_2000_Chipset.exe.
Click OK.
- In the Winbook J4 Chipset Driver installation Wizard: Install To:
C:\drivers\chipset. This will install Windows 2000/ME
Chipset drivers for your Winbook J4. Click Install.
- Click Next.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish. The computer will restart.
Installing the ATI Video Driver for the WIFI Winbook J4’s
- Click Start, then Run.
- In the Open box type: D:\, then Click the Browse
button.
- Select J4_2000_video.exe, Click Open.
- In the Open box you should have the following: D:\J4_2000_video.exe.
Click OK.
- In the Winbook J4 Chipset Driver installation Wizard: Install To:
C:\drivers\video. Click Install.
- Click Next.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- Click Finish and Yes to restart
your computer.
- At the desktop help window, Uncheck Show Window at Startup,
then close the Window.
Installing the WIFI Driver
- Click Start, then Run.
- In the Open box type: D:\, then Click the Browse
button.
- Select J4_2000_WIFI.exe, Click Open.
- In the Open box you should have the following: D:\J4_2000_WIFI.exe.
Click OK.
- In the Winbook J4 Chipset Driver installation Wizard: Install To:
C:\drivers\WIFI. Click Install.
- Click Next.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- Click Finish and Yes to restart
your computer.
- Click Start, Settings, Control
Panel.
- Double-Click the System icon.
- Select the Hardware tab, then Click the Device
Manager button half way down the page on the right.
- Click the Plus (+) to the left
of Other Devices if it’s not already open.
- Double-click on the Network Controller.
- Click the Drivers tab, then Click on the Update
Driver button in the lower right corner of the Network
Controller Properties Window.
- Click Next.
- Select Display a list of the known driver for this device
so that it can choose a specific location. Click Next.
- Hardware Type Window: Select Network Adapter.
Click Next.
- Click Have Disk button.
- In the Install from disk Window, Change MANUF to c:\,
then Click Browse.
- Look in: c:\drivers\wifi\, Click Open.
- Locate File Window: Change *.INF to *.*,
Click OK.
- Select Acton WN3101A Mini-PCI Wireless Adapter,
Click Next.
- Click Finish.
Installing Smartlink Modem for Winbook J4 with WIFI
You will need WinZip to unzip the file you download. WinZip has a trial
download. Go to www.winzip.com
and get the trial version.
To install the proper driver for your Smartlink 56K modem, you will need
to go to the following webpage: www.smlink.com/download/index.htm.
Once you are at the Smartlink website do, do the following:
- Select License Agreement for End Users.
- Click Yes.
- Select the Operating System from the pull down menu: Win2K.
- Click Submit. The driver will download to the specified
location.
To install the new Smartlink Modem driver, do the following:
- Click Start, Right-click on My
Computer, Left-click Properties.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click on the Device
Manager button.
- Click the Plus (+) to the left
of Other Devices.
- Double-click on the last PCI device.
- Click on the Driver tab.
- Click on the Update Driver button
in the lower right hand corner of the window.
- The Found New Hardware Wizard will appear. Click the radio button
to select the option “Install from a list or a specific
location” and click Next.
- Click the option “Search for the best driver in these
locations” and then click the box next to “Include
this location in the search:”. Click the Browse
button and browse to the folder where you extracted the driver files
and click OK. Then click the Next
button.
- You will see a message that the driver has not passed Windows Logo
testing, click Continue Anyway.
- You will see files copied and then a window saying the Smart Link
56K Voice Modem has been installed, click Finish.
- You will see small balloon messages appear in succession in the lower
right corner of the screen indicating it is finding and installing several
new devices.
- Your modem is now installed with the new driver.
Installing the Synaptic's Touchpad for the Winbook J4
- Click Start, then Run.
- In the Open box type: D:\, then Click the Browse
button.
- Select J4_2kxp_touchpad.exe, Click Open.
- In the Open box you should have the following: D:\J4_2kxp_touchpad.exe.
Click OK.
- In the Winbook J4 Chipset Driver installation Wizard: Install To:
C:\drivers\touchapad. This will install Windows 2000/ME
Chipset drivers for your Winbook J4. Click Install.
- Click Next.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish. The computer will restart.
