WARNING: Using this procedure will completely erase ALL data on your hard drive. You MUST backup any files you wish to keep. WinBook will not be held responsible for any data lost using this procedure.

Before beginning, please make sure you have the following items:

Windows 98 Install CD

Windows 98 Product ID Number (The Windows 2000 Product ID that came with your computer will not work).

Floppy disk containing the File SiModem.exe downloaded from www.winbookcorp.com (Si Drivers Page). If you have this file on other media, you do not need to download it.

Removing Windows 2000

  1. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer. 
  2. When you see the message "Press F2 to enter Setup", press the F2 key.
  3. Press the right arrow key until the word "BOOT" is highlighted at the top of the screen.
  4. Press the "+" key until ATAPI CD-ROM is at the top of the list. 
  5. Press the right arrow key until the word "Exit" at the top of the screen is highlighted.
  6. Highlight "Exit Saving Changes" and press Enter. When asked if you wish to save changes, press  Y and then Enter. The computer will reboot.
  7. You will have a choice between  "Boot from Hard Disk" or "Boot From CD-ROM." Choose "Boot from CD-ROM." with the arrow keys and press Enter. You will have 3 choices, choose 2 Start Computer with CD-ROM support.
  8. When you have the A:> prompt, type  FDISK and press enter. You will get a message asking if you wish to use Large Disk Support. Press Y, then Enter. You may get a second message asking if you wish to treat NTFS partitions as Large Disk Partitions. If you get this message, press Y and Enter. If you do not get this message, proceed to the next step.
  9. You will be presented with the FDISK menu. Choose "Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive.
  10. Choose "Delete Primary DOS Partition." If you get a message saying "no primary dos partitions exist", then use "Delete Non-DOS Partition."
  11. Enter 1 and press Enter. When asked, type in the Volume Label from the listing at the top of the screen and press Enter. 
  12. FDISK will ask if you are sure. Press Y and Enter.
  13. Press ESC until you have the A:\> prompt at the top of the screen. Type FDISK /MBR and press Enter.
  14. Restart the computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  15. Choose "Boot from CD-ROM.."
  16. You will see 3 choices, choose 2: "Start Computer with CD-ROM support."
  17. When you get the A:\> prompt, type FDISK and press Enter. Press Y then Enter for Large Disk Support.
  18. Choose "Create DOS Partition or Logical DOS Drive." Choose "Create Primary DOS Partition."
  19. When FDISK has finished verifying drive integrity, it will ask you if you wish to use the full size of the drive. Press Y and Enter. When FDISK is finished, press ESC until you get the A:\> prompt. Restart the computer by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys all at the same time .

Installing Windows

  1. Choose "Boot from CD-ROM." Then choose option 2: "Start Computer With CD-ROM Support."
  2. At the A:\> prompt, type D: and press Enter. When you have the D:>\ prompt, type CD WIN98 and press Enter.
  3. Type FORMAT C: and press Enter. You will receive a warning that this will destroy all data on the hard drive. Press Y and Enter.
  4. When format has finished, it will ask you for a Volume Label. Press Enter. When you have the D:\WIN98>  type SETUP /P J and press Enter  (Note: there must be a space between P and J).
  5. Setup will perform a routine check. Press Enter to begin the check. When finished, Windows will ask you which directory to install Windows into. Click Next to choose the default directory (C:\Windows).
  6. Windows will ask you which type of installation you would like to do. Select Typical and click Next.
  7. When Windows asks you which components to install, select "Install Most Common Components" and click Next. Windows will ask you for the computer name. If you are on a network, consult your network administrator to obtain this information. If you do not intend to use the computer on a network, you may name the computer whatever you like. Windows will then ask your location, choose the country you are in and click Next. 
  8. Windows will tell you it is ready to create a Startup Disk. Click Next. When Windows asks you to insert a disk, click Cancel. Since your Windows 98 CD is bootable, you do not need a startup floppy. 
  9. Windows will begin copying files. When it is finished, remove the Windows CD, and press Enter to restart (Windows will prompt you to do this). 
  10. Windows will ask for your name, enter this information and click Next. When you see the License Agreement, choose I Accept and click next. Enter your Product ID number and click Next.
  11. When the computer reboots, it will present the PC Card Wizard. Click Next on each screen, without changing any selections. Click Finish when it is finished. Windows will ask to restart.
  12. Windows will ask you select a time zone. Choose the time zone appropriate for your location and click next. Windows will continue updating, then the computer will restart.
  13. Windows will tell you it has found some new devices. It may ask for the Windows 98 CD. Place the CD in the drive and click OK. If Windows tells you it cannot find a file, you will need to change the path. Look for the white box and erase whatever is in it, then type in D:\WIN98 and click OK. 
  14. You will see wizards for the PCI Multimedia Audio Device,  PCI Communications Device, and PCI Graphics Adapter. On each of these, click Next on all boxes. When it is finished, click Finish. These devices will be setup later. (You may not see all of these messages. If not, skip to the next step.)
  15. Windows will ask you for a password. If  you do not wish to use one, enter your name and leave the password box blank. If you wish to use a password, enter that now. 
    Note: The Windows password does not protect your computer from someone else using it. This password only applies to networking applications and multiple user setups. It is possible to use the computer and view files on it without knowing the password. If you choose not to use a password, some networking components may not work properly.

  16. Windows  may ask for the Windows 98 CD. Place the CD in the drive and click OK. If Windows tells you it cannot find a file, you will need to change the path. Look for the white box and erase whatever is in it, then type in D:\WIN98 and click OK. 
  17. You will see a screen which says "Welcome to Windows." Windows Setup is complete.

Installing Modem Drivers

  1. Insert the floppy disk containing the modem driver you downloaded (SiModem.exe). Double Click on My Computer, double click on the A: Drive. Double Click on the program you downloaded. When the window opens, choose Unzip. When it is finished, click Close.
  2. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. Open System and Click on the Device Manager Tab. Under Other Devices, highlight PCI Communication Device and click the Properties Button.
  3. Click the Driver tab, and Click Update Driver. Click Next, then Select "Search for the Best Driver," and click Next. Check the Box for Specify Location.
  4. In the white box for Specify Location, type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\MODEM and click Next.
  5. Windows will tell you it has found the LT Winmodem,  click Next. When Windows has finished copying files, click Finish. Click on Start, Shutdown, and choose Restart then click Ok.

Downloading Drivers

You can now set up your internet connection and download the rest of the files you will need to finish installing Windows. If you need assistance setting up you internet connection, you should contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you already have the drivers on some other media, copy them to the hard drive at this point. You may need to change the directory paths listed below in order to access these drivers. It is recommended that you put these driver folders into a directory called drivers\win98.

You will need to download the following files:

SiAudio

SiButtons

SiPCSock

Si2Touch

SiVideo

Si2SSAPP

(SiPCMCIA and Si2BG are optional files and are not covered in this WinBook Tech Article)

When you have downloaded each of these programs, you must run them to create the drivers directory on your hard drive.

Installing Video Drivers

  1. Click on Start, Run. In the Box type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\VIDEO\SETUP.EXE.
  2. Click Next in the first window to open. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement. 
  3. Setup will ask you to insert a disk, click Ok. 
  4. Setup will tell you it cannot find the file ATIRAGE.CAT, click Skip File.
  5. When setup is finished, it will ask you to restart the computer, select Yes and click Finish.

Installing the Audio Driver.

  1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. Open System and click on the Device Manager tab. Click on the plus + sign next to Other Devices.
  2. Highlight the PCI Audio Device and click the Properties Button.
  3. Click on the Driver tab and click Update Driver. This will begin the Update Driver Device Wizard, click Next.
  4. Windows will ask if you want to Search for a driver or Display a list. Choose Search and click Next.
  5. Check the box for specify location. For the location enter C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\AUDIO If you saved the drivers to a different directory, please enter that directory here, click Next.
  6. When Windows is finished copying files, close all of the open Windows and click Start, Shutdown and choose Restart, then click Ok.

Enabling Infrared Support

  1. Click on Start, Settings. Control Panel. Open the Infrared Control Panel.
    Note: Sometimes when opening the Infrared Control Panel, it will place it behind the Control Panel Window. If you double Click on Infrared and do not see anything open, try minimizing the Control Panel Window.

  2. Click on the Options tab. Place a checkmark in the box labeled Enable Infrared Communications. 
  3. If you are going to use the Infrared Port for Printing, you will need to limit the port speed. Place a checkmark in the box labled Limit Connection Speed. In the white box, choose 57.6 kbps. 

Installing the EZ-Buttons Software.

Click on Start, Run. In the white box, type C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\BUTTONS\SETUP  and click OK. EZ-Buttons will become active when you restart.

Installing the Speedstep Application.

  1. Click on Start, Run and type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\SSAPP\SETUP and click Ok.
  2. The Setup program will open, click Next. When the setup programs asks if you wish to reboot, choose Yes and click Finish. The Computer will restart.

Updating the PC (PCMCIA) Socket Drivers.

  1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. Open System and click on the Device Manager tab. Click on the plus + sign next to PCMCIA Socket.
  2. Highlight the first O2 Micro Cardbus Controller and click the Properties Button.
  3. Click on the Driver tab and click Update Driver. This will begin the Update Driver Device Wizard. Click Next.
  4. Windows will ask if you want to Search for a driver or Display a list. Choose Search and click Next.
  5. Check the box for specify location. For the location enter C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\PCSOCKET If you saved the drivers to a different directory, please enter that directory here. Click Next.
  6. Windows will tell you it has found an updated driver. Click Next. When Windows has finished copying files click Finish. Click Close one the O2Micro Properties Window.
  7. Highlight the second O2 Micro Cardbus Controller and click the Properties Button.
  8. Click on the Driver tab and click Update Driver. This will begin the Update Driver Device Wizard. Click Next.
  9. Windows will ask if you want to Search for a driver or Display a list. Choose Search and click Next. Under Specify Location it should say C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\PCSOCKET. Click Next
  10. Windows will tell you that it has found a driver that will work. Click Next. If Windows asks you to insert a disk, click OK. If Windows tells you it cannot find a file, in the box labeled "Copy Files From" type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\PCSOCKET. If Windows shows a white box with the O2 Micro Cardbus controller listed, and a 2000 date, highlight that line and click Next.
  11. When Windows has finished copying files, click Finish. Click Start, Shutdown, and choose Restart then click Ok.

Installing the Touchpad Application Software.

  1. Click on Start, Run and type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN98\TOUCHPAD\SETUP
  2. The Setup program will run, click Next. Setup will ask which directory to install the software to. Click Next, then Next again. Setup will copy files, then ask if you wish to restart the computer. Select Yes and click Finish.

Enabling Modem Dialing Sounds

Double Click on the Speaker icon in the lower right corner (next to the clock). Click on the Option menu and choose properties. Select Other, and change the selection to Phone, then click Ok. Move the Phone Volume slider all the way to the top, then move it back to the middle. This will enable modem dialing sounds.
