NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

You will need the following items to install Windows 2000 on this machine:

Windows 2000 CD with Product Key

LT Winmodem Drivers for the WinBook Si/Si2

Important Note: Due to possible problems after installing Windows 2000, It is STRONGLY recommended that you do a complete backup of all data on your hard drive before running the setup program. If you have a problem loading or running Windows 2000 after the upgrade, you may have to reformat the hard drive in order to use the computer again.

1. Download the Si2kmodem.exe file from the website and expand the file. Copy the drivers from the expansion directory onto a floppy disk. If you choose not to use a floppy, write down where you expanded the files to, you will need it later.

2. Insert the Windows 2000 cd. After a few seconds you will get a message asking if you would like to upgrade to a new version of Windows. Click yes. If you do not get this message, open my computer and double-click on the CD-ROM icon.

3. You will get a dialog box asking you to choose the setup method, either upgrade or clean install. Choose upgrade and click next.

4. When Setup presents the License Agreement, choose Aceept  and click next.

5. When Setup asks for it, enter the Product Key. You need to use the key that came with your Windows 2000 package. The Windows 98 Product Key you received with you WinBook will not work.

6. You will see a "Prepare to Upgrade" box. Click Next

7.You will be asked to provide upgrade packs. Choose no and click Next.

8. Setup will ask you to upgrade the File System to NTFS. Choose whichever option you wish. If you are not sure which option to use, choose no. If you choose NTFS, you it will be more difficult to return to Windows 98 later.

9. Setup will show a list of devices that it does not have drivers for. The LT WinModem should be on the list. Highlight the LTWinmodem. Place the floppy disk containing the Si LT Winmodem driver in the drive, and click "Provide Files". A dialog box will ask you to point to the location of the drivers. Highlight the A: drive and click next. If you saved the files to another directory, locate that directory.When instructed, remove the floppy disk from the drive. Add any other drivers that Setup cannot find the files for using the same method. 

10. Setup  will show you an upgrade report. Please read the report carefully and note any files it recommends saving. It will probably suggest that you make backups of files in your WinBook Drivers directory. There is no need to do this as there is a copy of these drivers on the restore cd. Click next when finished. You may get a box that states not all hardware or software is supported. Click Continue to proceed with the installation.

11. Setup is now ready to install Windows 2000. Click next to continue, and the computer will reboot. When asked which operating system to use, Choose Microsoft Windows 2000 Setup.

12. Windows will check the disks and then begin copying files.

13. You may get a message saying that the LT Winmodem driver does not contain a Microsoft Digital Signature. Click Yes to continue the Installation.

14. Setup will continue to run automatically, then will ask for an administrator password. Enter the password you wish to use. You must enter the password twice.

15. You should now be able to log into Windows. Remember to change the user name to Administator, or the password you entered before may not work.
