NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

WARNING! Restoring the Windows 98 master image will delete all data currently on your hard drive.

In order to proceed you will need to following items:

1. The WinBook XL2 Version 4 restore CD-ROM.
2. Your Windows 98 Certificate of Authenticity.

Note: If you do not have your certificate of authenticity do not continue with this WinBook Tech Article until you have it. You will not be able to install Windows until you insert these numbers.

Changing The Boot Sequence to allow booting from the Restore CD.
As the computer is starting up, you will see the message Press DEL for Setup. Press the DEL key until you see the blue Setup Screen. Use the Down Arrow key to move to the Advanced CMOS Setup menu. Press the ENTER key once. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight BOOT SEQUENCE. Press the PgUp key till the setting is CD-ROM,A:,C:. Press the ESC key once. Press the F10 key once. When asked if you wish to save changes, press Y and then Enter.

This WinBook Tech Article is divided into two sections: Partitioning and Restoring. If you are installing onto a new hard drive then you should start with the Partitioning section. If you are re-imaging your original drive then skip to the Restoring section.

PARTITIONING:

1. Insert the WinBook XL2 Version 4 Windows 98 restore CD-ROM into your CD drive.

2. Restart the computer.  Press Del to enter the Ami Bios Hi Flex Setup Utility.  Note the size of the hard disk drive in the BIOS under the standard CMOS setup.

3. At the main menu choose option #1 or #2 for HDPrep (create a suspend to disk partition).  Select #1 for a hard disk of 6gb or larger, or option #2 for 5gb and smaller.

4. Press the spacebar to continue past last chance to stop message.

5. After the suspend to disk partition is created the computer will restart on its own.

6. At the main menu choose option #3 for FDISK.

7. Press the spacebar to continue past last chance to stop message.

8. Press Y to enable large disk support. Then press the Enter key.

9. At the FDISK menu press the 1 key to create DOS partitions, and press Enter.

10. Press #1 to create primary DOS partition, then press Enter.

11. It will then ask if you want to use the entire drive for this partition. Press Y for yes, then press Enter.

12. After the Primary DOS partition is created it will tell you that in order for the changes to be made you must restart the computer. Press the Esc key to restart.

RESTORING:

WARNING! Make sure that there are no PCMCIA cards plugged into the system when attempting to restore the image on the hard drive. Having cards in at this time could cause the system to become unstable or unusable.

Note: If you see a message indicating that you have an Invalid Image, you may have the incorrect BIOS for the Restore Cd that you are using. If you receive this message, please contact Technical Support for assistance with this.

1. Ensure that the XL2 Restore CD-ROM is in the CD drive and restart the computer.

2. At the main menu press the 4 key to begin the image restore process.

3. Press the spacebar to continue past last chance to stop message.

4. Click on the restore button. Then click on the yes button.

5. Your machine will then begin the process of installing the Win98 Second Edition master image on to your hard drive.

6. When the image has completely copied to the hard drive it will prompt you to press Reboot to restart your system. When you see this message remove the restore CD-ROM from your CD drive. Then press Reboot to restart the computer.

7. Once windows loads it will prompt you to insert your registration information (Name and Windows Product Key).   You will be asked to enter the time zone and date, which you can do at this point.  Once this information has been inserted Win98 will be ready for use.
