Warning: All data in the Windows 98 directory will be deleted! This includes data files for Outlook and Windows Outlook Express.

You will need the following things to reinstall on this machine:

• Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM
• Windows 98 Second Edition Certificate of Authenticity Product Key. (Located on the front of the Windows 98 Owners Manual)
• ATI DVD Player CD
• Blank formatted 1.44MB Floppy disk

Changing The Boot Sequence to allow booting from the Windows 98 CD.

As the computer is starting up, you will see the message Press DEL for Setup. Press the DEL key until you see the blue Setup Screen. Use the Down Arrow key to move to the Advanced CMOS Setup menu. Press the ENTER key once. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight BOOT SEQUENCE. Press the PgUp key till the setting is CD-ROM,A:,C:. Press the ESC key once. Press the F10 key once. When asked if you wish to save changes, press Y and then Enter.

Deleting the Windows Directory

1. Turn the unit on.
2. Insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. When the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM Start Up Menu appears on the screen, Select 2; Boot from CD-ROM.
4. You will then have another menu appear on your screen with three selections. Choose 2, Boot computer with CD-ROM support.
5. This will copy some CD-ROM driver files and then take you to the A: prompt.
6. Type C:\ and then press the Enter key.
7. Type copy c:\windows\command\deltree.exe and then press Enter.
8. At the C:\ prompt, type deltree c:\windows and press the Enter key.
9. MS-DOS will ask you if you want to delete Windows and all of its sub-folders. Press the Y key and then press Enter.

Note: Deleting the Windows directory can take a long time. Please allow the unit at least 30-45 minutes to complete this process.

9. Once it is completed, you will again be at the MS-DOS prompt.

Reinstalling Windows 98 Second Edition

1. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys simultaneously. This will cause the unit to reboot.
2. Select 2. Boot from CD-ROM.
3. At the next menu, choose 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support.
4. At the MS-DOS prompt, type D:\ and press Enter.
5. At this MS-DOS prompt, type setup /p j and press Enter.
6. Windows 98 Setup will now perform a routine scan of your hard disk. Press Enter to continue.
7. This will take you to the Windows 98 Setup screen.
8. Now Windows 98 Setup will ask you what directory you would like to have Windows 98 installed in.

Note: It is recommended to let the Operating system be installed in the default directory, which is C:\Windows

9. Once the directory has been selected click the Next button. Windows 98 Setup will begin setting up the directory.
10. Setup will then ask for any options you may have. We suggest using the selection Typical. Click on the Next button.
11. Windows 98 Setup will then ask you what other components you would like to setup. Use Install with the most common components
(Recommended). Click Next to continue.
12. The next screen will prompt you for your Computer name, Workgroup name, and Computer description. Once this information has been entered, click the Next button.
13. Setup will now prompt you to establish the location that you are at. Make a Country selection and click the Next button.
14. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now prompt you to make a Startup disk. Insert a blank 3.5 1.44 MB "High Density" floppy disk.

Note: If you have a XL2 with a LS-120 disk drive please cancel the process for making a startup disk. If you would like a startup disk made for your machine, please finish this WinBook Tech Article and then read the last section Making a Startup Disk in Windows.

15. Click the Next button.
16. After it copies the system files needed for the Startup Disk, it will prompt you to remove the Startup disk. Remove the disk and click on the OK button.
17. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now announce that it will begin copying files. Click the Next button.
18. The Welcome to Windows 98 Setup will display. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will begin to copy files and at the end, will prompt you to reboot the system when finished.
19. Leave the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in the drive.
20. When the unit boots up it will come to a menu. Select 1. Boot from Hard Disk option and press Enter.
21. When it boots into Windows 98, The Windows 98 Setup Wizard will prompt you to type a User name and Company name.
22. Once done, click Next.
23. Windows 98 Setup will then display the Software License Agreement. If you agree to the terms of the License, click the "I accept the agreement" selection to install Windows 98.

Note: If you do not agree, click "No I don't accept the Agreement". Windows 98 Setup Wizard will inform you that it cannot continue.

24. Once you have made a selection, click the Next key.
25. The Windows 98 Setup Wizard will then prompt you for your Windows 98 Product Key. Your Windows 98 Product key is located on the front of your Windows 98 manual.
26. When you are finished, click the Next key.
27. On the next Windows Setup 98 Wizard screen, Windows 98 will report that it has saved all information. Click the Finish button.
28. Windows 98 Setup will now initialize the Driver Database and begin setting up any hardware and Plug and Play Devices that you have on the computer.
29. Windows 98 Setup will then start the PC card (PCMCIA Wizard). It is recommended to use the default selections and click on the NO selection and press Next.
30. Use the default setting that is highlighted which is No and click on the Next button.
31. This screen will prompt you to finish the PCMCIA installation. Click on the Finish button.
32. Windows 98 Setup will continue setting up all Plug and Play devices and also detect all Non Plug and Play Devices.
33. When it has finished, it will begin installing more Plug and Play drivers Windows 98 Setup will again prompt you to restart the unit. Click on the Restart Now button, or allow the automatic timer to re-boot the system after 15 seconds.
34. Again select 1. Boot from Hard Disk and press Enter.
35. Windows 98 Setup will now prompt you for the Date and Time and the Time Zone. Enter this information if the Time and Date information is not correct.
36. Select the Time Zone tab and select the proper Time Zone. Once this is done, click on the Apply button and then click on the OK button.
37. Windows 98 Setup will start updating System Settings and prompt you to re-boot the system when finished. Click on the Restart Now.
38. Select 1. Boot from Hard Disk and press Enter.
39. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now begin to setup more hardware.
40. When it boots into Windows 98, it will prompt you for a User name and a Password.
41. After the User name has been entered, click on the OK button or press Enter. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will finish setting up the system. It will then find New hardware and the unit will then boot completely in to Windows 98 and the Welcome to Windows 98 screen will appear.
42. For the moment, close the Welcome to Windows 98 box by clicking on the X box in the upper right corner.
43. Remove the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM.

Updating the Video Driver and Monitor

1. Click on the Start button and choose Run.
2. Hit the Backspace key once.
3. Now type c:\drivers\video\setup.exe and the hit Enter.
4. The ATI Driver Wizard will now be on your screen.
5. Hit the Next button.
6. Read the License agreement and click on the Yes button to agree.
7. The setup program will no copy files to your hard drive and then install DirectX software.
8. To finish the setup, click on the Finish button and your computer will reboot.
9. When the computer is back in Windows, you will now have a new screen entitled ATI Desktop Help. For now, click on the X at the upper right corner of that window.
10. Click on the Start button and choose Settings.
11. Click on the Control Panel.
12. When Control Panel is finished loading, look for the Display icon and double click on that.
13. Click on the Settings tab.
14. On the lower right hand side of the screen, move the progress bar from less to more. If you have a 14.1" screen, then choose 1024 by 768.  If you have a 12.1" screen, then choose 800 by 600.
15. Now click on the down arrow on the left side of the screen to choose the correct colors.
16. Choose High Color (16 bit).
17. Click on the Apply button and click on Apply the new settings without restarting.
18. Now click on the OK button.
19. A Display Properties box will appear on your screen telling you that Window will resize the desktop. Click OK.
20. Once the desktop has been resized, click on the Yes button to keep the settings.
21. Your display adapter is now correctly configured.

Updating the ESS sound card

1. Click on the Start button and then choose Settings and then Control Panel, find the System icon and double click.
2. Find the Device Manager tab and click on it.
3. Now find the category called Other Devices. Branching out from it are two listings. Double click on the PCI Multimedia Audio Device. Click on the Driver tab across the top. Click on Update Driver.
4. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next.
5. In the next list, highlight Sound, video, and game controllers and click Next.
6. Click on Have Disk and then where it says "Copy manufacturer's files from," delete the A:\. Type in c:\drivers\audio and click Next.
7. An ESS Device Manager is now found by windows.
8. Click on OK to continue.
9. Windows will now give you a location of the driver. Click Next.
10. Once windows is finished copying files, it will build a driver information database.
11. Windows will now find additional devices that are needed to use the sound card.
12. If prompted to insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD, press OK.  Change the text of the copy files from and type in c:\windows\system and press OK.
13. When Windows is done, click on the finish button.
14. Then click Close. Now click on OK to exit System Properties. Restart the computer.

Updating the Modem

1. Back at the desktop, Control Panel will still be open. Double click on the System icon. Click on the Device Manager tab. The Other Devices category has only one listing now.
2. If the listing is a PCI Communication Device, proceed to Updating the ESS PCI Modem. If the listing is an Unknown Device, proceed to Updating the LT Win modem.

Updating the LT Win Modem

1. Double-click on the Unknown Device located under the Other Devices icon.
2. Click on the Driver tab.
3. Click on the Update Driver button, and click on the Next button.
4. Click on "Search for a better driver than the one you are currently using," and then click on the Next button.
5. Place a check mark in the Specify a location box by clicking on the box.
6. In the location box type c:\drivers\modem.
7. Click on the Next button.
8. Windows 98 will search the driver files and find the LT Win Modem.
9. Click on the Next button.
10. Windows 98 will also find a Wave Device and will prompt you to allow the Add New Hardware Wizard to search for updated drivers for it. Click on the Next button.
11. The "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)", should be highlighted.
12. Click on the Next button.
13. Place a check mark in the Specify a location by clicking on the box. Note: The correct location should still be typed in the path.
14. It will find the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device.
15. Click on the Next button.
16. Click on the Finish button to finish installing the driver.
17. Click on the Finish button to finish installing the LT Win Modem.
18. Click on the Resources tab.
19. Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings box.
20. Scroll down and click on the Direct Memory Access 07 line.
21. Click on the Change Settings button.
22. Using the small down arrow on the screen and change setting to 05, and click on the OK button.
23. Click on the OK button again to close out the LT Win Modem Properties.
24. Windows 98 will say that you have "Created a Forced Configuration." Click on the Yes button to finish.
25. Windows 98 will then need to be restarted to finish installing the LT Win Modem.
26. Click the Yes button to shut down and restart the system.

Updating the ESS PCI Modem

1. Back at the desktop, Control Panel will still be open. Double click on the System icon. Click on the Device Manager tab. The Other Devices category has only one listing under it now. Double click on the PCI Communication Device. Click on the Driver tab.
2. Click on Update Driver. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. Click Next.
3. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next.
4. Select modem and click next.
5. A models window appears with ESS Device Manager [12-30-98] highlighted. Click Next. Then click Next again.
6. An Add new hardware wizard appears searching for drivers for an Unknown Device. Click Next.
7. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next.
8. Find and highlight Modem and click Next.
9. Now click the button Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\ and type in c:\drivers\modem and click OK.
10. A Models window appears with ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem [12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Click Next again.
11. An Insert Disk Window appears looking for a file called ESMDM98.CAT. Windows is copying files from D:\WIN98. Click on the button Skip File.
12. Once done click on Finish. Click Finish again. Now click Close.
13. Back in Device Manager there is now a category called Modem with a listing branching from it that has no description, just a phone icon and a yellow exclamation mark. Double click on this line and the click on the Resources tab. Click on Set Configuration Manually.
14. Take the check mark out of the Use Automatic Settings box. Settings Based On is a drop down menu. Click on Basic Configuration 0000 and select Basic Configuration 0002. Click OK. A forced configuration warning appears. Click Yes.
15. An Add New Hardware Wizard appears looking for drivers for an unknown device. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next.
16. A Models window will now appear on your screen. Click on Have disk. Now type c:\drivers\modem and click OK. Click Next. Now click Next again. A copying files warning pops up looking for a file called ESMDM98.CAT, click on the Skip File button. Windows will want to copy one more file called _inst32i.ex_ . Type in c:\drivers\modem for this file and then click OK.
17. Click on Finish.
18. Windows will then find the Wave Device for Voice Modem. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Click Have Disk. Delete the A:\ and type in c:\drivers\modem and click OK. Make sure Voice Modem Serial Wave Device is highlighted and click OK. Then click Next. Now finally, click Finish.

Updating the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port

1. While still in device manager, double-click on the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port, located under the Network adapters icon.
2. Click on the Resources tab.
3. Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings.
4. Click on the arrow beside the Settings based on box.
5. Select Basic configuration 0003.
6. Click on the Direct Memory Access 00 setting.

Note: The Direct Memory Access setting may already be set to 03. If it is, then continue on to step 9.

7. Click on the Change Setting button.
8. Click on the small Up arrow and change the Value to 03.
9. Click on the OK button.
10. Click on the OK button to close the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port Properties.
11. You will get a box that pops up stating that you are "Creating a Forced Configuration."
12. Click on the Yes button. Windows 98 will inform you that "You have made changes to your hardware settings and that before your devices will work you must restart your system." Click on the Yes button.

Installing the DVD player Software

1. After the computer has powered back up and is at the desktop, insert the DVD player software CD in to the CD-ROM.
2. The CD will autoplay and bring up an ATI Setup window.
3. Click the Next button.
4. This will display the License Agreement. If you agree to the terms, click on "I agree with this agreement" and click on the Next button.
5. It will be default to the Express Setup. Click Next.
6. It will begin installing the DVD player and the drivers. It will stop at an ATI Setup screen that will ask you for the Region you are in and give you six regions to choose from. Make your selection and click on the Finish button.
7. You can read the Read Me now or later. Your DVD player software has now been installed. Click Yes or No to continue.
8. You must restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Creating a Startup Disk in Windows

1. Click on Start and choose Settings and then click on Control Panel.
2. Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon and then click on the Startup Disk tab.
3. Insert a Blank 1.44MB "High Density" floppy disk and then click on the Create Disk button.
4. When finished, eject the disk and click on OK.
