NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

You will need the following things to reinstall on this machine:
Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM
Windows 98 Certificate of Authenticity Number
One Blank Formatted "High Density" 1.44mb floppy disk.

Changing The Boot Sequence to allow booting from the Windows 98 CD.
As the computer is starting up, you will see the message Press DEL for Setup. Press the DEL key until you see the blue Setup Screen. Use the Down Arrow key to move to the Advanced CMOS Setup menu. Press the ENTER key once. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight BOOT SEQUENCE. Press the PgUp key till the setting is CD-ROM,A:,C:. Press the ESC key once. Press the F10 key once. When asked if you wish to save changes, press Y and then Enter.

Deleting the Windows Directory

1. Insert the Windows 98 Second edition CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Power on the computer and immediately tap the Del key until you get a blue screen with some menu options.
3. Arrow down to Advanced CMOS Setup and press Enter.
4. Arrow down to Boot Up Sequence and hit PgDn unit CD-ROM, A:, C: is selected.
5. Now press Esc. Then press F10 and finally Enter.
6. The computer will be rebooting.
7. A menu with two options will appear on your screen. Arrow down to the second option "Boot from CD-ROM" and press Enter.
8. A second menu will not be on your screen. Choose #2 which is "Start Computer With CD-ROM Support" and press Enter.
9. Type C: and press Enter.
10. Type copy c:\windows\command\deltree.exe and then press Enter.
11. Type deltree c:\windows and press Enter.
12. A prompt will appear asking you to delete windows and all of it sub-directories. Press y and then press Enter.
    
    Note: Deleting the Windows directory can take a long period of time. Please allow approx. 30 minutes for this to complete.
    
    
13. When the Windows directory is finished the computer will be at an A:\ prompt.
    

Reinstalling Windows 98

1.   Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and the computer will reboot.
2.   Choose the #2 option to Boot from CD-ROM.
3.   At the second menu choose #1 Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM.
4.   Windows setup will now give you a few options for setup. Press Enter to continue.

Note: A message could appear stating that the computer already has an operating system installed. Choose "continue setup and replace your current operating system.

5.   Windows 98 Setup will now perform a routine scan of your hard disk. Press Enter to continue.
6.   This will take you to the Windows 98 Setup screen. Press click on Continue to proceed.
7.   Now Windows 98 Setup will ask you what directory you would like to have Windows 98 installed in.

Note: It is recommended to let the Operating system be installed in the default directory, which is C:\Windows

8.   Once the directory has been selected click the Next button. Windows 98 Setup will begin setting up the directory.
9.   Setup will then ask for any options you may have. We suggest using the selection Typical. Click on the Next button.
10. Windows 98 Setup will then ask you what other components you would like to setup. Use Install with the most common components
(Recommended). Click Next to continue.
11. The next screen will prompt you for your Computer name, Workgroup name, and Computer description. Once this information has been entered, click the Next button.
12.  Setup will now prompt you to establish the location that you are at. Make a Country selection and click the Next button.
13.  Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now prompt you to make a Startup disk. Insert a blank 3.5 1.44 MB "High Density" floppy disk.
14.  Click the Next button.
15.  After it copies the system files needed for the Startup Disk, it will prompt you to remove the Startup disk. Remove the disk and click on the OK button. Mark that disk "Windows 98 Boot Disk".
16.  Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now announce that it will begin copying files. Click the Next button.
17.  The Welcome to Windows 98 Setup will display. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will begin to copy files and at the end, will prompt you to reboot the system when finished.
18.  Eject the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM until the Windows 98 screen appears on your screen. After the Windows 98 screen appears, then push the door closed.
19.  When it boots into Windows 98, The Windows 98 Setup Wizard will prompt you to type a User name and Company name.
20.  Once those are entered, click Next.
21.  Windows 98 Setup will then display the Software License Agreement. If you agree to the terms of the License, click the "I accept the agreement" selection to install Windows 98.

Note: If you do not agree, click "No I don't accept the Agreement". Windows 98 Setup Wizard will inform you that it cannot continue.

22.  Once you have made a selection, click the Next key.
23.  The Windows 98 Setup Wizard will then prompt you for your Windows 98 Product Key. Your Windows 98 Product key is located on the front of your Windows 98 manual.
24.  When you are finished, click the Next key.
25.  On the next Windows Setup 98 Wizard screen, Windows 98 will report that it has saved all information. Click the Finish button.
26.  Windows 98 Setup will now initialize the Driver Database and begin setting up any hardware and Plug and Play Devices that you have on the computer.
27.  Windows 98 Setup will then start the PC card (PCMCIA Wizard). It is recommended to use the default selections and click on the NO selection and press Next.
28.  Use the default setting that is highlighted which is No and click on the Next button.
29.  This screen will prompt you to finish the PCMCIA installation. Click on the Finish button.
30.  Windows 98 Setup will continue setting up all Plug and Play devices and also detect all Non Plug and Play Devices.
31.  When it has finished, it will begin installing more Plug and Play drivers Windows 98 Setup will again prompt you to restart the unit. Click on the Restart Now button, or allow the automatic timer to re-boot the system after 15 seconds.
32.  Again eject the CD-ROM. After the Windows 98 screen appears, push the door closed.
33.  Windows 98 Setup will now prompt you for the Date and Time and the Time Zone. Enter this information if the Time and Date information is not correct.
34.  Select the Time Zone tab and select the proper Time Zone. Once this is done, click on the Apply button and then click on the OK button.
35.  Windows 98 Setup will start updating System Settings and prompt you to re-boot the system when finished. Click on the Restart Now.
36.  Again eject the CD-ROM. After the Windows 98 screen appears, push the door closed.
37.  Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now begin to setup more hardware.
38.  An Add New Hardware Wizard will be on your screen and will ask for a driver for the Infrared PnP Serial Port. Click on next, select option to let windows search and put a check in CD-ROM. Windows will find the necessary driver. Click next and finally click finish.
39.  Windows will now give you an error stating that there is a problem with your display adapter. Click on cancel.
40.  Windows will also give you an Add New Hardware Wizard for the LT win modem. Click on next many times until finish is an option. Click on finish.
41.  When the computer boots into Windows 98, it will prompt you for a User name and a Password.
42.  After the User name has been entered, click on the OK button or press Enter. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will finish setting up the system. It will then find New hardware and the unit will then boot completely in to Windows 98 and the Welcome to Windows 98 screen will appear.
43.  For the moment, close the Welcome to Windows 98 box by clicking on the X box in the upper right corner.

Adjusting your Display Settings

1.   Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and click on Control Panel. In the control panel, double click on the Display icon. Next, click on the Settings tab.
2.   Adjust your Color Palette to High Color 16 Bit.
3.   If you have a 12.1" screen then you will want to adjust your screen area to 800 by 600 pixels. If you have a 13.3" screen you will want to adjust your screen area to 1024 by 768 pixels.
4.   Once you have adjusted your screen area and color palette, click on the Apply button. Click on the option to apply the changes without restarting and then click on the OK button. Windows will then apply your changes and ask you if you want to keep this setting. Click on the Yes button. Click on OK to close out of the display properties.

Note: If you have a 56k PCMCIA modem card that shipped with the unit then proceed to Installing the 56k PCMCIA modem.

Updating the LT Win Modem

1.   Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
2.   This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
3.   Under Other Devices, highlight the LT Win Modem and click on Properties. Next, click on the Driver tab.
4.   Click on Update Driver. This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard. Click on Next.
5.   Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, and click on the Next button.
6.   First you have to select a device. Scroll down to Modem and click on the Next button.
7.   In the next screen, click on the Have Disk button. In the "Copy manufacturer's files from:" box, type in d:\drivers\modem\lucent\1643 and click on the OK button. A list of two LT Win Modem selections will appear. Select the Lower Listing and click on the Next button. An Update Driver Warning will appear stating that the driver you have chosen was not written specifically for the selected hardware. Click on the Yes button.
8.   In the next screen, Windows will now be ready to install the selected driver. Click on the Next button.
9.   Windows will then find a Wave Device for Voice Modem. Click on Next. Again, select "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location," and click on the Next button.
10.  In the next screen, click on the Have Disk button. In the "Copy manufacturer's files from:" box, type in d:\drivers\modem\lucent\1643 and click on the OK button. It will then find the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device. Click on the Next button. Windows will then finish installing the device. Once completed, click on the Finish button.
11.  Windows will then say that it has finished installing an updated driver for your hardware device. Click on the Finish button.
12.  The LT Win Modem Properties window will be open. Click on Close from the driver Tab.
13.  The modem is now properly set up.

Installing the 56k PCMCIA modem

1.   Insert the 56K PCMCIA card modem into one of the PCMCIA slots on the left side of your computer.
2.   A "New Hardware Found" will appear on the screen.
3.   Next an "Update Device Driver Wizard" will appear.
4.   Insert the 1.44mb floppy disk that contains the PCMCIA drivers that were copied earlier, into the floppy drive.
5.   Click next. Click on the option to "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location" and click Next.
6.   At the next screen, click on the button "Have Disk".
7.   In the "Copy Manufacturer's files from" type c:\drivers\pcmcia and click OK.
8.   A Lucent-Venus-PCMCIA 56k DataFax modem will now be in the window. Click Next.
9.   Finally click Finish. Your modem is now installed.

Enabling the Infrared Port

1.   Still in the Device Manager, highlight the Infrared PnP Serial Port (*PNP0510) and click on the properties button.
2.   Click on the Resources tab and then click on the Set Configuration Manually button.
3.   Take the check out of the "Use Automatic Settings" checkbox and then change the Basic Configuration to 0002. Next, click on Direct Memory Access and then click on the change setting button.
4.   In the Edit Direct Memory Access screen, type in 3 and click on the OK button. Click on the OK button again to close out of the Infrared PnP Serial Port Properties. It will warn you that you adjusted one or more resource settings manually. Click on the Yes button to continue.

Note: Windows may ask for the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM. Type d:\win98 and click OK.

5.   Click on the Close button to get out of the System Properties screen.
6.   Still in the control panel, double click on the Infrared icon. In the Infrared Monitor window, click on the Options tab.
7.   Put a check in the box next to "Enable infrared communication" and then press the Apply button.
8.   Your Infrared is now set up, click on the OK button to close the Infrared Monitor.

Updating the Sound Card

1.   Click on Start, go up to Settings and click on Control Panel.
2.   In control panel, double click on the System icon.
3.   Now click on Device Manager. Choose View Devices by Type is selected.
4.   Click the plus sign next to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
5.   Click on Yamaha OPL3SAx-WDM driver. Now click on the Properties button.
6.   Click on the Driver tab and click on Update Driver.
7.   An Update Device Driver Wizard is now on your screen. Click Next to proceed.
8.   Choose Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want and then click Next.
9.   Click on the button Have Disk.
10.  In "Copy manufacturer's files from:" type c:\drivers\audio and click OK.
11.  A window with Yamaha OPL3-Sax Sound system highlighted will appear. Click OK.
12.  An Update Driver Warning window will appear. Click Yes to continue.
13.  Windows will now install the driver. Click Next to proceed.
14.  To end the install, click on Finish.
15.  Click on Close to close the sound card properties.
16.  Click on Close the System Properties.
