Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is a new feature included with Windows 98 second edition. ICS allows multiple computers on a network to connect to the Internet by using one Internet connection. To set up ICS on your computer, please follow the below steps.

WinBook Technical Support does NOT support Internet Connection Sharing. This WinBook Tech Article is provided to you, the customer, so that you can take advantage of this new feature.

You will need the following things to complete this WinBook Tech Article:

  • Windows 98 second edition installed on your computer
  • Your computer correctly configured for your network
  • A Windows 98 second edition CD-ROM
  • A blank formatted 1.44 MB floppy disk

Installing Internet Connection Sharing Applet

1. Turn the unit on and boot into windows 98.
2. Click on the Start button and choose Settings.
3. On the Settings tab choose Control panel.
4. In Control panel, double click Add/Remove Programs icon.
5. In Add/Remove Programs, click on the Windows Setup tab.
6. Scroll down the list of components until you see Internet Tools.
7. Double click on Internet Tools and the first option that you can choose from is Internet Connection Sharing.
8. Click the box next to Internet Connection Sharing and then click the OK button.
9. Click the Apply button and windows will ask for your Windows 98 second edition cd-rom.
10. Insert your windows 98 second edition cd-rom and click OK.
11. Windows will copy some files and then an Internet Connection Sharing Wizard will appear.

Note: Run the Internet Connection Sharing wizard only on the computer your network uses to connect to the Internet.

12. Click Next and a box will appear with a list of network adapters that you use to connect your computer to the Internet. (i.e. dial up adapter)
13. Choose the correct adapter and click Next.
14. Another box will appear with a list of network adapters that you use to connect your computer to your network. (i.e. network card)
15. Choose the correct network adapter and click Next.
16. Insert the blank formatted 1.44MB floppy disk into the floppy drive and click next.
17. Click yes to make a client configuration disk.
18. The wizard will finish making the disk and a window will appear telling you that Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing is finished making the client configuration disk.
19. Remove the disk and click OK.
20. Then the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard is done. Click finish.
21. Windows will then want to reboot. Click Yes to reboot your computer.
22. Internet Connection Sharing is now setup on your laptop.

Setting up a client computer to use Internet Connection Sharing

1. Insert the client configuration disk that you created with the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard.

Note: Make sure your client computer has Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed and has either Microsoft® Internet Explorer 3.x or later installed or Netscape® Navigator 3.x or later installed.

2. Click on the Start button and then click on Run.
3. Hit your backspace key once and then type a:\icsclset.exe (where "a:\" stands for the floppy drive) and then click on the OK button.

Note: Make sure that the computer on your network that you use to connect to the Internet is turned on and already connected to the Internet before you configure your client computer.

4. A Browser Connection Setup Wizard will now be on your screen.
5. Click the Next button.
6. The Connection Wizard is now ready to configure your client computer. Click the Next button.
7. The Connection Wizard is now finished configuring your browser.
8. If you wish to connect to the Internet immediately click the box next to that option.
9. Your client computer is now setup to use Internet Connection Sharing.
