Some XL2’s will not "Suspend to RAM" in Win98. Using the following procedures can identify this problem:

  • Turn on the unit and load Win98 normally.
  • Press the Fn-F4 suspend key or use the Start button on the task bar and select Standby (be sure Hibernate is disabled in Control Panel, Power Management. This enables suspend to RAM.)
  • The unit will enter Standby for a moment then you will see the CD-ROM drive get pinged then you will see the LS-120 and HD get pinged.
  • The unit will then act as it would when suspending to Disk but since Hibernate is OFF; it hangs with the backlight of the LCD screen on. When a key is pressed it will come out of this mode.
  • Another way to test is that with the BIOS set to Suspend to DRAM, if the FN-F4 is pressed when the unit is booted to DOS, it will suspend to Disk.

Cause:

It has been determined the cause of this is due to the ‘smart’ technology within the battery being improperly set.

Solution:

  1. Download and extract RST2040.EXE from the XL2 drivers page of the WinBook website.
  2. Boot to DOS by pressing the F8 key during bootup. You should see a Win98 startup Menu. Select "Command Prompt only" and press enter. You should be at a c:\windows> prompt.
  3. Type cd\test and press enter. You should now be at a C:\test> prompt. Type rst_2040 and press enter to reset the Smart Battery Controller within the battery pack. Turn off and reboot the notebook.
  4. The battery will now need re-calibrated again. Important! Before beginning this process make sure your AC adapter is plugged in. Turn the unit ON and press the DEL key when prompted to enter Setup. Go to the "Power Management Setup" menu and press Enter. Arrow down to Battery Auto Calibration, and change it to enabled. You will get a message stating, Please make sure that the AC adapter & battery are present. Do you wish to do battery auto learning? (y/n) Press Y and then Enter. Once calibration is completed the computer will prompt you to shutdown and restart.
