No Dial Tone
- If you receive a no dial tone error the first thing
is to test the line with anther device. A telephone is usually the easiest
device to use.
- If you hear dial tone, go to Control Panel and
open the Modem tool. Select the LT WinModem and click Properties.
- Go to the Connection tab and remove the check mark
from Wait for dial tone before dialing.
- Next, check your settings by clicking on the Dialing
properties button. If you do not have call waiting or work in an office
that requires you dial a number to access an outside line these boxes
should be blank.
- Test the modem by attempting to connect to any
of the pre-configured connections in Hyperterminal. This applet can
be open through the Start menu by pointing to Programs, followed by
Accessories, and then Communications.
"Port already open" or "Couldnt
open port" Errors
- First check the BIOS by pressing F2 when the unit
starts and then selecting Advanced followed by Peripheral Configuration.
Modem should be set to Enabled with a Base I/O of 2f8h and the DMA channels
should be DMA 5 and DMA 6. Next, press Esc, select Audio Option. Change
Sound to Enabled and change DMA A to DMA 0 and DMA B to DMA 1. After
verifying the settings are correct or changing the settings, exit the
BIOS by pressing Esc and then F10 to save changes.
- Next, boot to Windows, go to the Control Panel,
double-click the System icon, and go to the Device Manager tab.

Direct Memory Access 5
Direct Memory Access 6
- If any do not match, clear the Use automatic settings
box, ensure the Settings based on box is set to Basic configuration
0000. To adjust the Direct Memory Access settings, select the setting
and use the Change Setting button.
- When you click OK and then click Close to exit
the Device Manager, if you made any changes, you will be prompted that
you are creating a forced configuration. You will click the Yes button.
- Test the modem using the Modem Diagnostics. Open
the Control Panel, then double-click the Modem icon, and select the
Diagnostics tab. The modem will be on Com2, so click it and click More
Info. You should receive a window with port information and ATI commands
and responses. If you do, the modem is now responding.
- If the modem does not respond, return to the Modem
tool in the Control Panel, and on the General tab highlight the LT WinModem
and click the Remove button. Close the Modem tool and restart the computer.
- You will need to once again enter the BIOS and
verify the modem is enabled on 2f8h. The modem will often disable itself
when removed from Windows 98. Exit the BIOS and save changes using F10.
- Let the computer boot normally to Windows. You
should see "New hardware found" box and Windows should load
the driver.
- Return to the Modem tool in the Control Panel and
test the modem using the More Info button in the Diagnostics tab.
- If the modem still does not respond, there may
be another application that is preventing it from starting. The System
Configuration Utility is the best means of troubleshooting this issue.

the Start Button, clicking Run, and typing msconfig in the Open box.
- For instructions on how to use the System Configuration
Utility, click Help from the menu, and then click on Performing Troubleshooting
