Updating the Infrared PnP Serial Device to Fast Infrared v3.0.

  1. Click the "Start" button, then "Settings", then "Control Panel".
  2. Double click on the "System" icon.
  3. Click the "Device Manager" tab.
  4. Double click the "Network Adapter" icon.
  5. Double click the "Infrared PnP Serial Port".
  6. Click the "Drivers" tab.
  7. Click the "Update Driver" button.
  8. Click on "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location" selection.
  9. Click the "Next" button.
  10. Click on "Show all devices" selection.
  11. Click the "Next" button.
  12. Under "Manufacturers", scroll down and select "National Semiconductors".
  13. Under "Models" select "IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port".
  14. Click the "OK" button.
  15. Windows will copy some files and display that is has found the "IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port". Click on the "Next" button.
  16. It will copy more files and then display and "Windows MSGSRV Protection Error". Click on the "Close" button.
  17. It will show a smaller box saying "Msgsrv.dll" caused an error. Click on the "Close" button here also.
  18. Click the "Start" button, then "Shutdown", then "Restart". To restart the system.
  19. Click the "Start" button, then "Settings", then "Control Panel".
  20. Double click on the "System" icon.
  21. Click the "Device Manager" tab.
  22. Double click on the "Network Adapter" icon.
  23. Double click on the "IrDA Fast Infrared v3.0 Serial port".
  24. Remove the check mark from "disable in this hardware profile".
  25. Click the "OK" button to restart the unit. Note: It will shut all power off to the unit and it will be necessary to turn the power switch back on to continue.
  26. Click the "Start" button, then "Settings", then "Control Panel".
  27. Double click on the "System" icon.
  28. Click the "Device Manager" tab.
  29. Double click on the "Network Adapter" icon.
  30. Double click on the "IrDA Fast Infrared v3.0 Serial port".
  31. Click the "Resource" tab.
  32. Remove the check mark from "Use automatic settings" box.
  33. Click on the "Direct Memory Access line" with a setting of "00".
  34. Click on the "Change setting" button.
  35. Using the small up arrow button change the "Value" to 03.
  36. Click on the "OK" button.
  37. Click on the "OK" button again and allow the unit to restart.
  38. To enable the high speed Infrared data transfers, Click the "Start" button, then "Settings", then "Control Panel".
  39. Double click on the "Infrared" icon.
  40. It will report that you have an "Error code 45".
  41. Click on the "Identification" tab.
  42. Type in a "Computer name" and a "Computer description" It has to be different than the defaults it is named.
  43. Click on "Apply" button.
  44. Click on "OK" button.

You have now set up your WinBook XLi to use Fast Infrared v3.0 Serial Device.
