General Information: You can use the XLi restore CD to reinstall Windows 98 back to the factory shipped conditions. The subject of this WinBook Tech Article, covers using the CD on a new hard drive and restoring your original drive to factory shipped condition.

WARNING! Restoring the Windows 98 master image will delete all data currently on your hard drive. 

In order to proceed you will need the following items: 

  • The WinBook XLi restore CD.

  • Your Windows 98 certificate of authenticity

If you do not have your certificate of authenticity do not continue with this WinBook Tech Article until you have it.  You will not be able to install Windows until you insert these numbers.

 This WinBook Tech Article is divided into two Sections, Partitioning and Restoring.  If you are installing onto a new hard drive then you should start with the Partitioning section.  If you are re-imaging your original drive then skip to the section on Restoring.

Partitioning

  1. Insert the WinBook XLi Windows 98 restore CD into your CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
  2. At the main menu press the 1 key to activate option #1 for PHDISK.
  3. Press the spacebar to continue past last change to stop message.
  4. After the computer has completed creating the Suspend to Disk partition.  It will prompt you to hit any key to continue.  Press the spacebar.
  5. At the main menu press the 2 key to activate option #2 for FDISK.
  6. Press the spacebar at the last chance to quit screen.
  7. Press Y to enable large disk support to enable large disk support. Then press the enter key.
  8. At the FDISK menu press the 1 key to create DOS partitions, and press the enter key.
  9. Press 1 key to create primary DOS partition, then press enter.
  10. It will then ask if you want to use the entire drive for this partition.  Hit Y for yes, then press, enter.
  11. After the Primary DOS partition is created it will tell you that in order for the changes to be made you must restart the computer.  Press the esc key to restart.

Restoring 

WARNING!  Make sure that there are no PCMCIA cards plugged into the system when attempting to restore the image on the hard drive. Having cards in at this time could cause the system to become unstable and crash.

The next step is to determine which version of the Restore CD you have.  The version will be listed on the CD on the left side of the disk.

Version 1.0

  1. Make sure the WinBook XLi Restore CD in the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
  2. Choose option #3, Install WinBook XLi Windows 98 master.
  3. At the warning screen press the spacebar key to continue.
  4. When the system prompts for a password insert EZPW for the password.
  5. Click on the restore button.  Then click on the yes button.
  6. Your machine will then begin the process of installing the Win98 master image on to your hard drive.
  7. When the image has completely copied to the hard drive it will prompt you to hit ctrl+alt+del to restart your system.  When you see this message remove the restore CD from your CD-ROM drive.  The press ctrl+alt+del to restart the computer.
  8. Once windows loads it will prompt you to insert your registration information (Name and Windows Product Key).  Once this information has been inserted Win98 will be ready for use.

Version 2.0

  1. Make sure the WinBook XLi Restore CD is in the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
  2. Determine what size hard drive is in your computer. 
  3. If the drive is a 4GB then press 3 to Restore XLi Windows 98 4GB hard disk drive only.  Then skip to step 15.
  4. If your hard drive is any other size then press 4 to activate option #4, Restore on all other hard drives.
  5. At the warning screen press the spacebar key to continue.
  6. Click on the restore button.  Then click on the yes button.
  7. Your machine will then begin the process of installing the Win98 master image on to your hard drive.
  8. When the image has completely copied to the hard drive it will prompt you to hit ctrl+alt+del to restart your system.  When you see this message remove the restore CD from your CD drive.  Then shutdown the computer by pressing the power button.  Then restart the computer.
  9. Once windows loads it will prompt you to insert your registration information (Name and Windows Product Key).  Once this information has been inserted Win98 will be ready for use.

Version 3.0

  1. Make sure the WinBook XLi Restore CD is in the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
  2. This version of the restore CD will not work with any drives smaller than 4GB. However version 3 was only shipped on systems with 4GB or 6GB hard drives.
  3. To run the restore you will need to choose option 3, Restore XLi Windows 98 4GB hard drive only.  Choose this option whether you have a 4GB or a 6GB hard drive.
  4. At the warning screen press the spacebar key to continue.
  5. Click on the restore button.  Then click on the yes button.
  6. Your machine will then begin the process of installing the Win98 master image on to your hard drive.
  7. When the image has completely copied to the hard drive it will prompt you to hit ctrl+alt+del to restart your system.  When you see this message remove the restore CD from your CD drive.  Then shutdown the computer by pressing the power button.  Then restart the computer.
  8. Once windows loads it will prompt you to insert your registration information (Name and Windows Product Key).  Once this information has been inserted Win98 will be ready for use.
