To take full advantage of Windows 98 power Management functions the Power management functions of the XLi should be disabled in the BIOS.

Windows has a more detailed and varied Power Management option than Windows 95. Power Management in Windows 98 maybe set to various user-defined schemes. To reach Power Management and set the power scheme for your unit, choose Start/Settings/Control Panel, and then double-click Power Management. In Power Management click on the Power Schemes tab. You may use one of the predefined schemes from the Power Scheme pull-down list or define your own. If you define a Power Scheme remember to save your settings by choosing the "Save As" button.
