NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

You will need the following things to reinstall on this machine:

• Windows 98 CD

• Windows 98 Certificate of Authenticity Number

Changing The Boot Sequence to allow booting from the Windows 98 CD.
As the computer is starting up, you will see the message Press DEL for Setup. Press the DEL key until you see the blue Setup Screen. Use the Down Arrow key to move to the Advanced CMOS Setup menu. Press the ENTER key once. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight BOOT SEQUENCE. Press the PgUp key till the setting is CD-ROM,A:,C:. Press the ESC key once. Press the F10 key once. When asked if you wish to save changes, press Y and then Enter.

Deleting the Windows Directory

1. Power up the laptop. Right when the machine turns on, start tapping the F8 key about once every second.
2. This will bring up to a Windows98 startup menu.
3. Type 6 and press the Enter key. Option number 6 is to boot to a command prompt only.
4. At the C:\ prompt, type: copy c:\windows\command\deltree.exe c:\ and press the Enter key. It should say 1 file copied.
5. Next, type deltree windows and press the enter key.
6. When the computer asks you to confirm deletion, type Y and then hit the Enter key. This will delete the Windows directory (It will take approximately 15-25 minutes).

 Reinstalling Windows 98

1. Turn the computer back on and let it boot to the CD-ROM Drive. When it boots to the first startup menu, select 2. Boot from CD-ROM and press Enter.
2. At the second startup menu, select 1. Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM and press Enter.
3. Next, you will enter the blue Microsoft Windows 98 Setup screen that welcomes you to Setup. Press the Enter key to Continue.
4. Select the option to Install Windows 98, and press the Enter key.
5. This will copy the Windows 98 setup files onto your hard drive. This may take several minutes. Setup will then tell you that it is going to perform a routine check on your system. When you see this message, go ahead and press the Enter key. Note: If you press the ESC key you will quit Setup.
6. Windows 98 Setup will begin by starting the Scandisk program. Let Scandisk run all the way through. If you exit out of Scandisk before it completes, Windows 98 setup will not continue. Note: If you get the error message "Problem Found" during scandisk at any time select "Fix It."
7. When Scandisk is finished, the Welcome to Windows 98 Setup screen will appear. This screen briefly describes Windows98 and tells you that Setup will take from 30 to 60 minutes to complete. You will also see the estimated time remaining to the left. To begin Setup, click on the Continue button. Setup will then prepare the Windows 98 Setup Wizard, which will guide you through the rest of installing Windows 98.
8. Setup will ask you what directory you would like to install windows to. Choose the default option, C:\WINDOWS. Then click on the Next button. Setup will then prepare you Windows directory and will also check for available disk space.
9. Next, Setup will ask you what kind of setup you prefer. We suggest that you choose Typical. If you are an advanced user you may divert here. These instructions will continue with the Typical option. Once you have made your selection, click on the Next button.
10. Setup will ask you which components you want to install. We suggest choosing the default option (Install the most common components (recommended)). If you are an advanced user, you may choose to show the list of components to you can choose what you want to install. These instructions assume you have chosen to install the most common components. When you have made your selection click on the Next button. Note: After installing Windows 98 you have the option of installing additional components, or removing installed components at any time. You can do this by using the Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel.
11. The next screen in Setup will ask for Identification. This is used to identify your computer on the network. If you are on a local area network, your Workgroup name must be the same as everyone else on the network. If you are unsure of what your workgroup name is, contact your system administrator for assistance. If you are not currently on a local area network, you can simply use the default settings to continue on with Setup. Once you have entered in your Computer name, Workgroup, and Computer Description, click on the Next button.
12. Setup will then want to establish your location. Follow the default (United States) and click on the Next button.
13. The Start Copying Files screen will be the next to appear. To start copying the Windows 98 files, click on the Next button. Windows will start Copying files to your computer's hard drive. You will see a File Copy Progress indicator in the lower left corner of the screen. This procedure may take several minutes.
14. After your computer is done copying files, you will see the Restarting Windows Screen. At this time please eject the CD-ROM drive, but do not take the Windows 98 CD out of the system. Windows will restart automatically. If you don't feel like waiting for Windows to automatically restart, you can also click on the "Restart now" button.
15. When the computer reboots and you see the Windows 98 splash screen, re-insert the Windows 98 CD.
16. You will now be asked for your Name and your Company Name. The company name is optional. When you have finished, click on the Next button.
17. When the Windows 98 Setup Wizard is prepared, the Software License Agreement will appear. Go ahead and read the licensee agreement. If you agree to the terms of the License, click on the "I accept the Agreement" text and then click on the Next button. Note: If you select "I don't accept the agreement," Windows Setup will inform you that it cannot continue.
18. If you continue, Windows Setup will then ask you for a product key. The key is located on the back of the CD sleeve. The product key is in the form XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Note: This key is a sequence of letters and numbers. The letters are NOT case sensitive. The text will be entered into the Product Key in upper case no matter what case you use. Once you have entered in your Product Key, click on the Next button.
19. Setup will then tell you that Windows 98 has saved all information. Click on the Finish button to continue starting Windows 98.
20. Setup will begin configuring your hardware. This may take several minutes. Setup will take you into a PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard. You want to follow the default settings all the way through here. Click on Next, then click on Next, and then Click on Finish. Setup will then go back to setting up the rest of your hardware. Once completed, Setup will restart your computer. Like before, please eject the CD at this time. After you get to the splash screen, please re-insert the Windows 98 CD.
21. When Windows restarts, it will set up your Plug and Play hardware. You will see several files being copied.
22. Windows will then ask you what time zone you’re in. Choose your current time zone from the list on the right side of the window. When you have the correct time zone selected, click on the Apply button, and then click the OK button. Windows will proceed to update your system settings. Once completed, Setup will restart you system. Once again, please eject the CD and re-insert it after Windows 98 starts to load.
23. Windows 98 will then ask you for a username and password. If you do not wish to have this screen come up in the future, do not put a password in. When you have finished, click on the OK button.
24. Windows will find a few more hardware devices and then continue to load.
25. You have now finished installing Windows 98 on your WinBook. Since this is the first time you have entered windows, the Welcome to Windows 98 tour will begin. Since you have just installed Windows, do not attempt to proceed with the online registration. In order to complete the online registration, you have to be connected to the Internet. If you are not connected to the Internet, you will get an error message stating that your modem is not configured. Note: If you do not wish to have this tour come up the next time you restart, you will need to take the check out of the box next to "Show this screen each time Windows 98 starts."

Adjusting your Display settings

1. Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the Display icon. Next, click on the Settings tab.
2. Adjust your Color Palette to High Color 16 Bit.
3. If you have a 12.1" screen then you will want to adjust your screen area to 800 by 600 pixels. If you have a 13.3" screen you will want to adjust your screen area to 1024 by 768 pixels.
4. Once you have adjusted your screen area and color palette, click on the Apply button. Click on the text to apply the changes without restarting and then click on the OK button. Windows will then apply your changes and ask you if you want to keep this setting. Click on the Yes button. Click on OK to close out of the display properties.

Updating the LT Win Modem

1. Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
2. This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
3. Under Other Devices, highlight the LT Win Modem and click on Properties. Next, click on the Driver tab.
4. Click on Update Driver. This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard. Click on Next.
5. Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, and click on the Next button.
6. First you have to select a device. Scroll down to Modem and click on the Next button.
7. In the next screen, click on the Have Disk button. In the "Copy manufacturer’s files from:" box, type in d:\drivers\modem\lucent\1643 and click on the OK button. A list of two LT Win Modem selections will appear. Select the Lower Listing and click on the Next button. An Update Driver Warning will appear stating that the driver you have chosen was not written specifically for the selected hardware. Click on the Yes button.
8. In the next screen, Windows will now be ready to install the selected driver. Click on the Next button.
9. Windows will then find a Wave Device for Voice Modem. Click on Next. Again, select "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location," and click on the Next button.
10. In the next screen, click on the Have Disk button. In the "Copy manufacturer’s files from:" box, type in d:\drivers\modem\lucent\1643 and click on the OK button. It will then find the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device. Click on the Next button. Windows will then finish installing the device. Once completed, click on the Finish button.
11. Windows will then say that it has finished installing an updated driver for your hardware device. Click on the Finish button.
12. The LT Win Modem Properties window will be open. Click on Close from the driver Tab.
13. The modem is now properly set up.

Enabling the Infrared Port

1. Still in the Device Manager, highlight the Infrared PnP Serial Port (*PNP0510) and click on the properties button.
2. Click on the Resources tab and then click on the Set Configuration Manually button.
3. Take the check out of the "Use Automatic Settings" checkbox and then change the Basic Configuration to 0002. Next, click on Direct Memory Access and then click on the change setting button.
4. In the Edit Direct Memory Access screen, type in 3 and click on the OK button. Click on the OK button again to close out of the Infrared PnP Serial Port Properties. It will warn you that you adjusted one or more resource settings manually. Click on the Yes button to continue.
5. Click on the Close button to get out of the System Properties screen.
6. Still in the control panel, double click on the Infrared icon. In the Infrared Monitor window, click on the Options tab. .
7. Put a check in the box next to "Enable infrared communication" and then press the Apply button.
8. Your Infrared is now set up, click on the OK button to close the Infrared Monitor.
