WinBook does not support Windows 98 on the WinBook XP. Any Questions regarding Windows 98 should be referred to Microsoft.

This FAQ reflects a full Windows 98 installation on a newly formatted 810 MB hard drive. All settings chosen during the Windows 98 installation should be left to Default. There were no external peripherals or PCMCIA cards attached during the Windows 98 installation procedure.

Q. Will Windows 98 work on the WinBook XP?

A. Yes, however, Windows 98 may not work properly due to conflicts between Windows 98, a Plug and Play operating system, and the WinBook XP, which is not a Plug and Play computer.

Q. Can I install either the Windows 98 upgrade or full version?

A. Yes. These can be purchased from and supported by Microsoft.

Q. Will the Power Management work on the WinBook XP?

A. No. Power Management functions will not work correctly on the WinBook XP. Some BIOS Power Management functions may work, however Windows 98 Power Management will be unable to control Power Management functions.

Q. Will the suspend or standby features work on my laptop after installing Windows 98?

A. No. These Windows 98 features will not work correctly on the WinBook XP since the BIOS is not Plug and Play.

Q. How much Ram (Memory) do I need to use Windows 98 on the WinBook XP?

A. 16 MB will work but we suggest 32 MB.

Q. How much hard drive space should I use for installing and operating Windows 98 on the WinBook XP?

A. We suggest you use at least a one gigabyte hard drive if you plan to install and use applications in Windows 98.

Q. How long does it take to install Windows 98 on the WinBook XP?

A. It will take about one hour to install Windows 98.

Q. Will Windows automatically detect all of the hardware native to the WinBook XP?

A. No. The internal modem will not be recognized. To install the modem run Add New Hardware in the Control Panel and then reboot for the changes to take effect. In addition the sound card may be recognized incorrectly. If the Windows 98 installation installs the sound card as an ES 1688 Audio drive and your sound card is not an ES 488 sound card, then update the sound card driver to an ES 688 Audio drive in the Device Manager under the sound card driver. If the sound card is an ES 488 Audio drive then update to that driver in the Device Manager under the sound card driver. You can assess your sound card type by looking at the writing on the large black chip of the sound card. Make sure you laptop is turned off. Turn over the laptop so the bottom of the unit is facing upward. The sound card is a small green board underneath a 2 inch by 2 inch panel that snaps up. If you open this compartment and see a small yellow/white socket, you do not have a sound card.

Q. How do I install Windows 98 on my WinBook XP since it does not have an internal CD-ROM?

A. An External CD-ROM or a WinBook Docking station with a CD-ROM is necessary for the Windows 98 CD installation. You may contact Microsoft to see if they have a diskette version of Window 98 available.
