Subject: Windows 95 does not shutdown on a WinBook XLi

The WinBook XLi running Windows 95C hangs at the Please Wait as the unit tries to shut down or restart. You may have noticed that are able to shut down by pressing any key on the keyboard.

The cause may be that USB Supplement to OSR2 has been uninstalled or has not been installed properly.

To check if the USB Supplement has been removed:

  1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. In the installed software list, scroll down to check for USB Supplement to OSR2. If it is not listed then has not been installed or has been removed.
  2. Close Add/Remove Programs, and in the Control Panel open the System icon. Click on Device Manager, and scroll down to check for category, Universal Serial Bus Controller. If underneath that category lists Intel 82371AB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller with a yellow exclamation mark, then the drivers have not been installed properly.
  3. Follow only the First Procedure below.

If Device Manager does not list Universal Serial Bus, but under Other Devices there is a listing for PCI universal serial bus, then follow the First Procedure and the Added Procedure on installing the Hard Drive Controller.

First Procedure: To install USB Supplement to OSR2:

  1. Put the Windows 95 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click on the Start button.
  3. Choose Run.
  4. Type in D:\other\updates\usb\usbsupp.exe and press Enter.
  5. Windows will ask you if you want to install Microsoft USB Supplement. Click Yes. Read the License Agreement, if you agree click Yes to continue.
  6. The USB setup will first run scandisk on the C: drive. Let it complete the scan.
  7. After Scandisk is completed, Windows 95 will copy some files. When it is done the Microsoft USB Supplement window will appear and notify that it is complete. Windows will then want to restart. Click on OK.
  8. Once your machine reboots back into Windows 95 click on the Start button.
  9. Choose Run.
  10. Type in D:\other\updates\usb\usbupd2.exe and press Enter.
  11. Windows will copy some files and then take you back to the desktop.
  12. Close any open windows and click on Start, select Shutdown, highlight Restart the Computer and then click on OK.

This should correctly install USB Supplement to OSR2.

Added Procedure: Updating the Hard Drive Controller and Power Management Controller.

  1. Once your machine has rebooted back into Windows 95, insert the disk labeled XLi PIIX4, CD-ROM, and Mouse.
  2. Click on the Start button
  3. Choose Run.
  4. Type in a:\piix4\setup.exe and press enter.
  5. Click on Next on the Intel 82371XB INF Update Installer.
  6. Read, then close the License agreement.
  7. Click on Yes to agree to the terms of the agreement.
  8. Another screen will come up notifying you of some file updates. . Follow the default and click on the Next button.
  9. Windows will copy some files then prompt you to restart the computer, remove the diskette from the floppy drive, then click on OK.
  10. The machine will restart itself, as it loads into Windows 95 it will find a series of new hardware devices.
  11. On the forth device Windows will stop and start the Update Device Wizard for the Intel 8237AB PCI Bus master IDE Controller.
  12. Click on Next, and Windows will search and find an updated driver.
  13. Click on Finish.
  14. The computer will continue to load windows, as it does it will find two more devices and set them up, then it will prompt you to restart. Click on YES.
  15. As Windows restarts it will find two more devices and install them with the Update Device Wizard, then will complete its loading of Windows 95.
  16. Once you are back in Windows 95 and you are at your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
  17. This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  18. Locate the Hard Disk Controller in Device Manager and click on the "+" sign to the left. Below that you will see Intel 82371 AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. Click on it to highlight it and then click on Properties button.
  19. Click on the Settings tab. Under Dual IDE channel settings, you should see Default.
  20. Click on the arrow to the right of the box and choose Only Primary IDE Channel Enabled, and then click on the OK button.
  21. To finish, click on Start, select Shutdown, highlight Restart the Computer and click on the OK button.
